Central United Methodist Church, Spartanburg, SC - Wednesday, March 27, 2024

from the Choirmaster’s desk…

First of all, I would like to thank the dedicated members of the Chancel Choir for their beautiful and spiritually moving rendition of the Rutter Requiem on Palm Sunday. It’s clear that the Requiem is not only a favorite of the choir, but of the congregation as well. Thank you, members of the congregation, for your kind words of support and appreciation after the service.

Next, I’d like to ask you a question. When’s the last time you heard a sung or said Alleluia in our Sunday morning worship service? If you answered, “Sometime before the season of Lent began,” you would be correct! Historically, because of the penitential nature of the season of Lent, singing or saying the word "alleluia" has been suspended during Lent's forty days. The word is reserved until Easter Sunday, when often times every hymn in the service has a refrain of alleluias, and choir anthems also generously feature the word.

The omission of alleluia during Lent goes back at least to the fifth century in the western church. The hymn Alleluia, Song of Gladness, contains a translation of an 11th century Latin text that compares an alleluia-less Lent to the exile of the Israelites in Babylon. The text then anticipates the joy of Easter when glad alleluias will return in all their heavenly splendor.

The Chancel Choir, accompanied by Brian Dailey at the organ, will celebrate the joy of Easter with over 100 sung Alleluias spread over three anthems! We hope to see you in church then, and even earlier at the Maundy Thursday service at 6:30 PM.

What if Jesus Had Said This?

a service devoted to no mistaking

Wouldn't it have been a great deal easier if there was no mistaking what Jesus said? So that what he meant would be clearer?

Imagine what he could have added and how Christianity might share in a different understanding - why this matters and that doesn't? Or what influence Jesus' more understandable words could have for those who claim to follow his teachings?

During our Service, we will consider some of Jesus' words, phrases, teachings and how, if these had been presented more clearly, his message might be interpreted differently.

The heroes who repaired Central's door last week! They only found out about the problem on Sunday and had a plan before they left for Sunday dinner!

Hero list:

Mike Ayers, David Earl Shelley, Jim Spencer, and John Reeves (not pictured).

BUILDING FUND EVENT

The Building Fund Raising Committee plans to raise some additional money by selling parking spaces during Spartanburg’s Spring Fling. We will use Central’s parking lot and the lot across Church Street which some members use during Sunday services. This was done very successfully in the past when the youth held the event. We will need volunteers on Friday evening, April 26th, all day Saturday, April 27th, and Sunday afternoon, April 28th. Each shift will be 3 to 4 hours and about 40 volunteers are needed to cover the necessary times.

If you are willing to help with this project, please call the church office (582-7263) and leave a message or send an email to: Gina Hamer.
