NATIONAL PUBLIC SAFETY TELECOMMUNICATORS WEEK

Communications dispatchers are often the first in line in emergency service response—the calming voice you hear when you are hurt, in danger, or need help fast. This week is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, which honors the women and men who answer 9-1-1 emergency calls and dispatch police, fire, and paramedic personnel that provide life-saving assistance. In 2022, Folsom’s communications dispatchers handled 88,247 telephone calls and dispatched 53,017 events; and 99% of all 9-1-1 calls were answered in 15 seconds or less. Join us in honoring the “first” first responders who are on the frontlines of emergencies and ensure help is on the way when we need it the most.

GALLERY AT 48 NATOMA HOSTS “PLAYFUL PIECES” EXHIBIT RECEPTION APRIL 14

The “Playful Pieces” exhibit brings together two artists focusing on the quirks and fun imagery from their childhoods. Cherie Hacker’s current series of paintings explores playful experiences that have brought joy to her life. Sandy Calhoun uses her skills as a ceramic artist to examine her quirks and neurosis, creating works that are humorous and personal.

The exhibit reception is open from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 14. The public is invited to attend the free reception to meet the artists and enjoy light refreshments and live music. The exhibit continues in the gallery through June 15.

The professional art gallery is located in the 48 Natoma Senior and Art Center; the gallery’s regular hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, with extended hours from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. Call 916-461-6601 for more information.

LOVE MY MOM FAMILY FITNESS EVENT MAY 7

The 9th annual Love My Mom 5K and Kids’ Dash takes place Sunday, May 7. This popular event that celebrates family and community is presented by Folsom Parks & Recreation in partnership with the Palladio and Kaiser. New this year: the 5K course finish line and post-race festivities move to the Palladio Piazza. The starting line will still be located by Whole Foods, and the course route is fast and flat, making it an ideal route for runners, walkers, and stroller striders–leashed dogs are welcome, too. The fun Kids’ Dash for ages 10 and under will be held prior to the start of the 5K, with medals awarded to all registered participants.

Participants in the 5K will be electronically timed and special awards will be presented to top finishers in a variety of categories including single and double strollers, top mom, top female, and top male. All registered 5K participants will receive a custom dry-fit shirt and unique commemorative finisher’s medal. At the finish area, all participants can explore vendor booths, enjoy DJ music, and refuel with light refreshments. Save on registration: use code “CityNews” for a $5 discount on each 5K registration at raceroster.com.

FOLSOM CELEBRATES ARBOR DAY

Every April, the City of Folsom shows its appreciation for its urban forest by participating in Arbor Day—a celebration of our beautiful trees and the many benefits they bring to our city. Folsom is home to a lush urban forest, a hallmark of our city that offers tremendous economic, health, and environmental benefits. Trees reduce heat in the summer, increase property values, enhance the vitality of business areas, provide shade, clean our air, and beautify the community.

The Folsom City Council adopted an Arbor Day resolution to encourage residents to plant and care for trees this April. The City of Folsom provides resources to help residents find the right tree for a property. The City Arborist offers an extensive master tree list and helpful articles on mulch, soil testing, mistletoe, and establishing young trees. Learn more at www.folsom.ca.us/arborist.

Free shade trees are also available for residents and businesses through the city’s partnership with the Sacramento Tree Foundation. Shade trees can help to reduce cooling costs during the hot summer months. To request free shade trees for your home, visit the Sacramento Tree Foundation website

The City of Folsom and Sacramento Tree Foundation will host community tree planting events throughout the year and are seeking locations for a tree planting or tree care event. Residents are encouraged to send location recommendations to Sacramento Tree Foundation Community Liaison Romi Holmes.
