ELDER OF THE MONTH - KAREN CLARK

SPECIAL NEWS AND INFORMATION

EASTERTIDE THOUGHTS

At the end of the Gospel of John, it says that Jesus did many other things in his earthly ministry and after his resurrection. And if every one of them were written down, the whole world would not have enough books to collect all of the stories. And in this last chapter we find one of the stories that was written for us to know and believe in the risen Jesus. He meets his disciples on the beach to have breakfast. In the wake of their grief, pain and surprise, Jesus meets his disciples’ needs. He takes the bread and the fish and gives it to his friends. Feeding them so that they can go and feed his lambs. Join us this Sunday and hear the simple yet complex call of Jesus to “Follow me!”

Yours In Christ,

Brandon

Prayers for others

Continue to pray for the recent wave of tornadoes across the United States; and the four major ongoing international crises: the Turkey-Syria earthquake; Sao Paulo, Brazil flooding; the Horn of Africa hunger crisis and the Ukrainian Humanitarian Crisis. These emerging crises also need our prayers: the armed conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo; Yemen; Syria; South Sudan; Burkina Faso; and gang violence in Haiti; the aftermath of tropical cyclones; flooding; forest fires; and earthquakes around the world. Additional prayers for the women of Afghanistan. And especially prayers for our nation and for strength, endurance, faith and courage for all.

A BLAST FROM THE PAST

Someone looks happy. Wonder who it is and why ???

GREEN SPACE

If you need a cup of coffee to get going in the morning, you can thank the birds and the bees that team up on farms where coffee is grown. Conducting field work on 30 Costa Rican coffee farms, researchers discovered that coffee beans grow larger and more plentiful when birds and bees join forces, with the bees pollinating the plants and the birds protecting them from pests.

Writing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, scientists report that without the combined efforts of these winged helpers—many of which have migrated from thousands of miles away—the $24 billion coffee industry would suffer nearly a 25% decrease in crop yields. They say their findings suggest that ecosystem services can be appreciably more valuable together than separately. "Nature is an interacting system, one full of important synergies," says an ecologist at Costa Rica's Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center.  (GSN #144)

WALK AT SYCAMORE SHOALS

Our next walk will be at 11 am on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22 at Sycamore Shoals State Park in Elizabethton. Take highway 321 toward Elizabethton.   The park is about 8 miles from the church.  Turn left into the park from the highway and follow the road past the fort, on your left, to park by the tennis courts.   The entrance to the park is just before you get to Sycamore Shoals Hospital. .

VIRTUAL CREATION ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK

ANTELOPE CANYON, ARIZONA

Amazing Places on our Planet (October 2016 | 8:11 min.)

Antelope Canyon is the most photographed slot canyon in the world. It is located on Navajo land near Page, Arizona, and managed by Lake Powell Navajo Tribal Park. Northern Arizona's pristine slot canyon invites visitors to step inside a monumental natural sculpture. Shaped by millions of years of water and wind erosion, the magnificent canyon was named for the herds of pronghorn antelope that once roamed the area. The Upper Antelope Canyon tour is the more popular route because more sunlight enters the canyon and the walls reach up to 120 feet. The Lower Antelope Canyon tour is equally impressive, immersing visitors in the swirling embrace of sandstone walls.

Saved by Faith and Hospitality

By Joshua W. Jipp

(241.JIP)

Too few Christians today, says Joshua Jipp, understand hospitality to strangers and the marginalized as an essential part of the church's identity. In this book Jipp argues that God's relationship to his people is fundamentally an act of hospitality to strangers, and that divine and human hospitality together are thus at the very heart of Christian faith.

Jipp first provides a thorough interpretation of the major biblical texts related to the practice of hospitality to strangers, considering especially how these texts portray Christ as the divine host who extends God's welcome to all people. Jipp then invites readers to consider how God's hospitality sets the pattern for human hospitality, offering suggestions on how the practice of welcoming strangers can guide the church in its engagement with current social challenges—immigration, incarceration, racism, and more.
