BOYS BASKETBALL

The Boys Basketball season culminated with lots of smiles at the end-of-season celebration last week. All program families were invited to attend dinner at the Neptunians Women’s Club Banquet Hall and enjoy a presentation from coaches who shared season highlights and recognized each player and student-athletes who achieved academic distinction. Seniors were honored for their 4 years of dedication to the team and the legacies they will leave with the program as they head off to new adventures. Team Captains also had an opportunity to deliver short speeches and the audience shared a few tear-jerker moments! It was a great way to wrap up the season

Spring training is in full force with weekly practices and team bonding events. Most recently, the team tested out their skills at the bowling alley.. After a couple of strikes, a few spares, and lots of gutter balls, they decided to head back to the gym. Next up, March Madness Watch Party!

Go Mustangs!

MCHS MARCHING BAND & COLORGUARD

MCHS Indoor Drumline Team & MCHS Winter Guard Team are having great seasons!

The Varsity Winter Guard had a successful and fun weekend competing in the WGI Power Regional in Palm Desert. They advanced to the second day of competition and placed 11 out of 25 teams in their division. The Varsity team is also competing in the WGASC at Monrovia High School.

Our MCHS Indoor Drumline Team competed at Great Oak HS in the PSA division. They placed 1st in Block 1 and 2nd overall. In every competition this season, they have placed 1st or 2nd in their division, which is a great place to be heading into finals.

MUN

In the last few weeks, Model UN students traveled both to the BMUN conference at UC Berkeley and the NHSMUN conference at New York. Both teams were very successful with many Costa delegates winning awards. At BMUN, two partnerships won the best delegate award, three partnerships and one delegate won the outstanding award, and 2 partnerships and two delegates won the commendation award. At NHSMUN, five dual delegations won the plenary award, two won the award of excellence, two won the award of distinction, and two won the award of merit. The Model UN students are now preparing for the final local conferences: SCMUN, UCIMUN, and McKennaMUN!

TECH & ENGINEERING

Cybersecurity:

The Cybersecurity Club just competed in picoCTF, a cybersecurity competition hosted by Carnegie Mellon University, structured around a capture-the-flag framework. We were challenged to engage in tasks that involved reverse engineering, cryptography, AI, web exploitation, and forensics to solve problems and capture 'flags’. We are also competing in the USCC CyberQuests competition; this season's event focuses on OSINT, log analysis, forensics, and git basics, where we analyze artifacts and answer quiz questions on the data samples.

Robotics:

We received both Excellence award and Tournament Finalist at Mt. SAC regional competition. This qualified us for States where we competed last weekend and received Sportsmanship award!

Aerospace:

We’re almost complete in our preparation for our qualification flights for ARC! We are nearing completion of STRATA 2 which has many notable upgrades over STRATA 1. STRATA 2 t is far more accurate and rigid in its design and utilizes a different guiding system that will result in more constant flight profiles.

VOLLEYBALL - BOYS

MIRA COSTA BOYS VARSITY VOLLEYBALL TAKES THE GOLD AT BEST OF THE WEST

Mira Costa’s Boys Varsity Volleyball brought home the gold at Best of The West this past month, the premiere volleyball tournament of the high school season. Mira Costa’s win marks the first time in history that a single high school has won the tournament four times.

The annual two-day tournament draws teams from Northern and Southern California, and as far away as Hawaii and Arizona. Over 30 teams competed for the title including top teams Loyola, Newport Harbor, Corona Del Mar, Huntington Beach, Punahou and more.

Mira Costa took on Newport Harbor in the finals, beating the tournament’s defending champions in two sets. Named to the All-Tournament team from Mira Costa was Tournament MVP, Victor Loiola, as well as Johnny Dykstra and Alex Heins. With this tournament win, Mira Costa Boys Varsity Volleyball record is now 16-1 for the season.

Please come cheer us on at our final games of the year! View the spring schedule.

RUGBY - BOYS and GIRLS

The Mira Costa boys and girls rugby teams both finished strong and had an amazing season this year, with both teams placing 2nd in their SCIRF divisions. On January 27th, we had a chance to honor our nine graduating seniors who’ve shown amazing talent, resilience, and teamwork this season and in prior seasons, all while having fun! These players have all helped to shape the legacy and leadership of this Rugby program, which continues to grow and thrive: Kinzie Malony, Grace Millea, Parker Conley, Tyler Gautier, Devon Kracht, Aiden Merriman, Justin Smith, Marco Succari and Donovan Wakefield. We are incredibly proud of each of these young men and women, all of whom will be missed tremendously. We also have so much gratitude for our coaches, who are firmly committed to this program and player growth. We look forward to celebrating at the end-of-season program-wide banquet on Monday, March 25, and looking ahead to an amazing season next year!

In keeping with our tradition and culture of competing locally, nationally and internationally, the Mira Costa boys and girls rugby teams hosted the Edmonton Gold in a 7s match at Mira Costa on February 28th. While the Canadians came out on top in both matches, nevertheless the Mustangs played some very competitive rugby. The boys next host Brophy HS from Phoenix, Arizona.

The Costa Rugby team is presently planning their international tour in April 2025 and are looking to travel to New Zealand.
