Viewing the Solar Eclipse

The big solar eclipse is coming!! Libraries across the country are encouraging patrons to safely witness this major astronomical event which will occur on August 21st. An eclipse of this magnitude has not occurred in the continental United States since 1979. The Library's viewing party is already booked solid, but there are other ways that you can participate in this experience.

The primary viewing region for this eclipse takes place across the Midwest of the United States. Here in New England we'll be able to see a partial eclipse, weather permitting between 1:30pm and 4pm; but thanks to modern technology, we'll also be able to see the total eclipse live, as it happens. In addition to the watching the live feed from NASA online ( Click here to visit the NASA website ).  You can get some cool FREE glasses here at the Nevins Library to watch the eclipse safely from your backyard. The Nevins Library got 1,000 pair of these glasses through our membership in STAR-Net, an organization with promotes science in libraries.

Come and get your viewing glasses here at the library, or call us at 978-686-4080 ext 12 to have us reserve some for you to pick up before August 21st. We are urging everyone to view the eclipse safely. Viewing without using special glasses can damage your vision. For more information call the Library or visit our web site at www.nevinslibrary.org.
