Celebrate National DNA Day with The National Human Genome Research Institute!

Celebrate National DNA Day with the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI)! NHGRI is leading celebrations of three anniversaries during April — the 70th anniversary of the discovery of DNA's double-helical structure, the 20th anniversary of the completion of the Human Genome Project, and the 20th anniversary of National DNA Day. To commemorate these milestones, NHGRI will hold a symposium on National DNA Day, April 25, highlighting relevant and interesting topics in genomics and concluding with the annual Louise M. Slaughter National DNA Day Lecture. Plan your DNA Day celebration with NHGRI now!

How Do You Extract DNA from a Strawberry? New Demonstration Video from NHGRI

Strawberries contain a lot of DNA and one of the best ways to actually see that DNA with your own eyes is to perform a DNA extraction experiment. Watch and follow along to the short “How Do You Extract DNA from a Strawberry” video to perform this experiment at home with common household items. A great way to celebrate National DNA from the comforts of home!

Bring Genome Sequencing to the Classroom in 7 'Easy' Steps!

National DNA Day was first celebrated in 2003 following the announcement of the completion of the first draft of the Human Genome Project (HGP). The HGP generated the first human genome sequence and it took 10 years! Today, sequencing the human genome is slightly less challenging and the NHGRI has created a short video demonstrating genome sequencing in just seven steps. Bring genome sequencing to your students by sharing the video “How to Sequence a Human Genome in 7 'Easy' Steps!” as part of your DNA Day classroom celebration!
