Still Waters Adult Day Center News & Updates
Still Waters Adult Day Center is a person centered, faith based, and activity rich center for our seniors. We provide a safe place Monday - Friday for seniors to engage with other seniors to encourage social, emotional, and physical well-being.
New faces coming to Still Waters
Beginning this month, we will have new interns and staff joining our team!

Help us welcome Brooklyn- Thanks to IUPUI Community Engagement we will be hosting a PR/Marketing intern for the next 6 months. Brooklyn is a Sophomore at the IU Kelley School of Business where she is studying marketing and minoring in Spanish. She has just finished a previous internship at Memorial Hospital in Jasper, IN.

Help us welcome Abby- Abby graduated from Murray State with a major in psychology and a minor in art. She is now attending IU Herron School of Art and Design where she is receiving her graduate degree in art therapy. She will work with our guests Wednesdays and Fridays for the remaining 2023-2024 school year.

Help us welcome Cheryl Curry- Cheryl will be joining us full time as our director of marketing and admissions. Cheryl was previously the recruitment, retention, marketing, and donor relation manager for the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana for the past 23 years. She will be an amazing asset as we continue to grow our center. If you have any upcoming opportunities where she can present at your organization, please reach out to her directly at cheryl@stillwatersadc.org.

Please help me welcome each one of these amazing ladies.
Pathways for Aging
Medicaid has a new look! With PathWays for Aging, you get support for your way-to live life your way. Research shows that most of Indiana's older Hoosiers want to age at home or they want to age independently in their communities. The Indiana Family and Social Services Administration will launch a new program in July 2024 to help make this happen. The program is called PathWays for Aging. It is for Hoosiers aged 60 and over who receive Medicaid (or both Medicaid and Medicare) benefits.
With PathWays, older Hoosiers can pick a health plan. That plan will help them to get high quality services and support they need to live as independently as possible. The program will expand Medicaid benefits. Each enrolled Hoosier will have a health plan care coordinator to help them get all their benefits.

Volunteer Spotlight- Lori and Paul
Lori and Paul are more than just volunteers at Still Waters. They both are part of the Still Waters family. Lori's journey began at Still Waters when she brought her dad to the center in 2018 after the death of her mother. After her dad passed in 2022, Lori began volunteering for us to return the love. She loves helping out with the guests and building relationships with them. She has a passion for kids, crafts, and gardening. Paul is a 29 member of the Castleton United Methodist Church. He still remembers when the center opened in 2011 and Deb McCloud talked to the congregation about the need for volunteers. In 2022 Paul began giving back his time at the center. He has a passion to serve others. His favorite activities are his grandkids, reading and golf.
As a volunteer your love makes you feel more love. Admittedly, love is a hard thing to measure. But when researchers at the London School of Economics examined the relationship between volunteering and measures of happiness, they found the more people volunteered, the happier they were. Volunteering builds empathy, strengthens social bonds and makes you smile — all factors that increase the feeling of love.
“One of the great ironies of life is this: He or she who serves almost always benefits more than he or she who is served.” - Gordon Hinckle
Creating opportunities for future leaders
While attending the 2023 Martin Caregiver Symposium at Indiana University last week we met some pretty awesome and amazing graduate students in the Human-Computer Interaction Program at the IU Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering at IUPUI. These 5 students are researching ways to integrate the use of technology when communicating with Alzheimer's guests, caregivers, doctors, and vice versa. They are visiting our center to talk with our guests to help them understand ways technology can help. Their final outcome of this project is to create a product that will help as a resource to communicate and help a person diagnosed with Alzheimer's. We always love when students come to the center and engage with our guests. B.B.King once said, "Don't let anyone block your path of achieving your goals. The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it from you."

Aging Well: In a Holistic Lens
Art Exhibit I Conversation I Meditation

Join visiting artist Julie McColly Hill for our winter wellness series. To launch the series, Julie will share a collection of art panels that she created for the Living Well With Dementia Conference held last spring in Indianapolis. This eight-panel exhibit features two sets of images. In the first set, the artist applies a holistic perspective to unpack the meaning of Dementia Friendly Environments using the language of symbols. The second set of images is a multi-media abstract expression of the first set. The inspiration for the abstract re-interpretation came from Julie’s personal experience as a caregiver.

Julie’s mother was one of the first participant at Still Waters. She and her family successfully applied this “holistic perspective of aging well” to navigate difficult family conversations and decisions regarding her mother's plan of care. With hindsight, Julie also credits routine meditation practice as being instrumental in managing the stress of balancing work, family, and the role of caregiver.

This winter, Julie will lead a routine meditation practice on Tuesdays from 3-4:30p.m. During each session participants will explore a variety of mediation techniques and discover the foundational difference of the eastern and western approach to medicine. Suitable for people of all ages and perfect for beginners, this meditation practice is intended to be an introduction to the mind, body, spirit connection. The program is free and open to the general public. Reserve your spot today.
