10 Conversations for the Summer

If you're not quite sure if your student is ready for college life, these important topics from Collegiate Parent might help start some important conversations.

  1. Choose your friends wisely.
  2. Study first, then play.
  3. Don’t look in the rearview mirror.
  4. Start planning for graduation.
  5. Resolve conflict immediately.
  6. Your professors are your friends.
  7. Avoid risky behavior.
  8. Don’t neglect your mental health.
  9. Not everyone is trustworthy.
  10. Master life skills.

And one extra conversation for good measure...

11. Carpe Diem — Seize the Day!

Encourage Your Student To Get Involved

COLLEGE READY

Tips for parents!

How Can I Help My Student Get Involved On Campus

Did you know that SUU has a whole office dedicated to helping students find different ways to get involved on campus? From planning campus events to starting up their own club to being in student government to helping out with athletics, The Student Involvement and Leadership Center can help your student find SOMETHING they are interested in and how they can be a part of SUU. There are also on-campus jobs that are a great way for students to feel connected to campus. It’s important for students to have a life outside of the classroom. Encouraging your student to make new friends in each class can help them find success in the classroom as well as enjoy all of the fun campus activities put on throughout the school semester! Be sure they are following @suustudentlife

Things to do:

  • Encourage your student to join a club
  • Encourage your student to attend as many different activities and events as possible
  • Encourage your student to make 1 new friend in each class
  • Visit the Student Involvement & Leadership Office (STIL) or review their website and find out the different ways students can get involved

How Can I Help My Student Succeed In Class

Making the academic transition from high school to college can be challenging and take time to navigate through. Encourage your student to set time aside to study the provided material, visit with their professors, and ask questions! Asking insightful questions can help your student be successful, as well as providing encouragement along the way. Get to know what resources are available to your student so that they know where they can go when they are struggling academically. SUU has a tutoring center and writing center where students can receive help. Each Professor has office hours where students can discuss material or ask questions usually one-on-one.

Things to do:

  • Learn about the Academic Resources that are available to your student
  • Encourage your student to create a schedule to help manage their time
  • Ask open-ended questions regarding your students academics, and allow them to drive the conversation when overcoming academic challenges
  • Encourage your student to connect with their professors and utilize the provided office hours
  • Remember, YOU know your student BEST and what they might need
