Triple P Elkhart County Parent Newsletter - November 2023

This Month in Triple P: Focus on school attendance with new workshops

The facts don't lie: School attendance is a critical issue for students and schools everywhere, particularly since the pandemic. Elkhart County is no exception. Triple P was part of a community presentation on the issue at the Children's Summit gathering in August, where partners of the local Child Dashboard identified falling attendance rates as a serious problem for our youth.

Triple P has been working with local school and nonprofit partners to support parents in encouraging their children to attend school consistently for some time now, but the data show that more focused effort is needed on behalf of the whole community. As part of the countywide Child Dashboard partnership, we at Triple P are offering Positive Parenting resources on school attendance -- Supporting School Attendance for parents of children in elementary school and for parents of pre-teens and teens in later grades in both English and Spanish -- intended to help parents identify barriers to school attendance and develop strategies to keep their students in school and learning!

Triple P has started offering monthly virtual workshops in both languages for parents of younger and older children on the first Thursday of each month. For December, these sessions will happen the evening of the 7th, with the English and Spanish workshops for parents of younger students starting at 6 p.m. and the English and Spanish workshops for parents of pre-teens and teens starting at 7:30 p.m.

While we invite school personnel and other professionals in the community to refer parents of children with attendance problems to these workshops, they are also open to the community. You can click on either of the images below to download a PDF copy of the information for December's sessions in English and in Spanish:

As always, you can find more information about these and other upcoming Triple P workshops and group sessions in the community at TriplePElkhartCounty.org. Read on for more Triple P updates!

Triple P practitioner Sarah Cole and her daughter, Lydia

Meet A Triple P Practitioner: Sarah Cole of The SOURCE

This month, we would like to introduce you to one of our longtime Triple P practitioners and childcare workers, Sarah Cole!

Sarah started with us during the summer of 2016, when she was trained as a practitioner at CAPS. In her time there, she became trained in multiple Triple P interventions and supervised multiple successful Triple P practitioners. Sarah now works as an Early Childhood Consultant for The SOURCE at Oaklawn and continues to practice Triple P professionally, both as a practitioner and as a child enrichment activity provider for Triple P events.

“Triple P has impacted me both personally and professionally,” Sarah said. Triple P has opened up many opportunities into her life that she wouldn’t have had if she were not involved with Triple P. She has been able to use the strategies not only with many parents and caregivers, but also with her own 7-year-old daughter, Lydia.

Sarah tries to use the positive focus of Triple P with all the families and caregivers she works with. She hopes to work with more families one-on-one to educate them on Triple P. As a contractor with Triple P Elkhart County, Sarah presents one-time workshops and groups on topics such as Disobedience and Balancing Work & Family.

As much as Sarah loves to be a practitioner, she loves her work providing child enrichment activities during Triple P events as well. She said she enjoys the interaction with the children and having conversations with them. We love to see Sarah having fun and playing with the children, and many times, Lydia is also there with her, playing and being creative.

She told us that her daughter is “a very extroverted person who loves to talk and get to know people.” Sarah always thought she would end up being a boy mom, but she is extremely thankful for her daughter and the memories she gets to create with her.
