July Newsletter

Chalk Fest invited the community together for a day of music and art on June 24

Dear Friends of the Arts,

July is the month when we send out our annual appeal for memberships to the Center. There's a good chance you might soon find our request in your snail mailbox, and if you don't, please go to our website and sign up there. Our members not only encourage and support the Center, but show grantors and the world at large, that our region values the arts and wants art to be a part of their lives.

Please go the extra step, and encourage your neighbors and friends to visit the Center, and to become members. We have exciting plans for the future, and want you to be a part of it all.

The arts are important for our community for so many reasons, from education for all of us, to local economic impact, to the simple and great joy of experiencing a work of art.

We look forward to seeing you at the Center!

Onward!

Carole

Current Exhibits

Regional Art Exhibit

Our regional artists inadvertently created their own theme with much of their art in the current exhibit focusing on the flora and fauna of the summer season with sunflowers, irises, lily pads, frogs, fish, and other animals adorning the space. Come to the Center and immerse yourself in the beauty. The current exhibits will be up through July 23.

Gender in the Art World

Discussion - Monday, July 17, 5pm

Facilitated by K. Kriesel in the

Alfie Mueller Room at the Center

The much-anticipated publication of The Story of Art Without Men by Katy Hessel, demonstrates gender in the art world is a hot topic right now. These dynamics affect how we perceive and value art, as well as how we pass art on to the next generation. How would you have preferred to learn about art during your school years with regard to gender? How do art exhibits demonstrate their gender demographics, if at all? Have you avoided or pursued certain art media because of its perceived masculinity or femininity?

The Galena Center for the Arts is well-suited for a community discussion on gender in the art world due to its staff & board, annual Broad Ideas show, and library - join us for a stimulating conversation!

Shades of Blue

An introduction to indigo,

the world’s oldest natural dye,

by Patricia Lehnhardt

Friday-Saturday, September 8-9, 9am-4pm

The world of plants is amazing. From green leaves to blue fabric, it is almost magical.

In this two-day class, September 8 - 9, Patricia Lehnhardt will guide you through how to grow the plants in your own garden, process the leaves into a dry pigment to use later, and do fresh leaf dyeing on wool yarn and silk fabric. The students will use powdered indigo from India to make a ferrous vat to dye cotton and linen fabrics, paper, and learn more ways to use the pigment, such as ink and watercolor paint. You will go home with many small samples you create in class and the knowledge that the shades of blue are just one of nature’s miracles of color.

Patricia started using natural dyes on her hand-spun wool yarn more than forty years ago. In retirement, she delves into surface design of fabrics using only natural dyes that she grows in her garden, forages in nearby ditches, or purchases from supply houses. She has learned the dye processes through her own library, on-line classes, and lots of experimenting.
