Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and it’s starting early this year! In my role as Vice Dean, I have embraced the opportunity to recognize and celebrate our people, our accomplishments, and our aspirations. To that end, I have carefully reviewed our Provider Engagement survey, our Staff Engagement survey, and worked closely with Dr. Starr Knight, Director of Faculty Experience, to identify our areas of strength and strengthen our areas of improvement. I’ve been very impressed with the efforts of our chiefs of service, other leaders, and many members of the community who have focused on creative, lasting ways to improve staff and faculty experience.
Our “Spring Thanksgiving” season of celebrations and gratitude began with “Thank a Resident Day” on February 23rd. The departments hosted celebrations for trainees and I enjoyed the opportunity to meet our trainees and learn what they value in their training experience at ZSFG. For International Women’s Week in early March, we hosted a wide range of events at ZSFG, ranging from professional photos to retirement consultations to panel discussions. I was honored to participate in a session with Associate Dean Margaret Damiano in which we shared aspects of our professional journey, our formative experiences, and the unique challenges and opportunities of being a female leader, a discussion that was enthusiastically coordinated by Laurae Pearson. I’m grateful to everyone who planned the events for International Women’s Week and proud that so many members of our community took advantage of the opportunity to create and sustain friendships, enhance their professional skills, and contribute to our collective experience. At the end of March, we celebrated Doctors’ Day and I hope you shared your appreciation with the physicians in your midst. We operate as a team, at all levels of our organization, and I believe it’s important to embrace opportunities for reflection and appreciation.
The culture of appreciation at ZSFG will be in full swing in June, when we will award the Exceptional Physician Award, our first Exceptional Advanced Practice Provider Award, our first Interprofessional Collaboration Award, the Krevans awards for interns, and the Rapaport Award! We anticipate that the awards committees will be challenged to choose the award winners because we’re privileged to work among many award-worthy colleagues.
Wishing you a Happy “Spring Thanksgiving!”

2024 Annual Provider Engagement Survey
|
|
 |
We partner with the trusted independent research organization Gallup Inc. to host a brief, annual, voluntary survey that provides an opportunity for us to identify our strengths and improvement areas as a workplace, towards improving our own work lives, those of our colleagues and UCSF overall.
UCSF is committed to this survey as an ongoing opportunity for all staff to help make positive changes in their workplace. UCSF's senior leaders believe in the value of the survey and take the results very seriously. With years of responses collected at UCSF, we have meaningful data to guide our work.

Survey Measures
Gallup’s internationally-renowned research has identified 12 questions about engagement that indicate a high-performing work environment, known as the “Q12.” Particular wording is used, such as “I have a best friend at work,” because research shows that the specific language reveals qualities that differentiate teams on critical outcomes such as productivity, safety and retention.
