Climate Resolution!
The Arlington County Board unanimously adopted a new climate policy statement on the county’s response to changing climate conditions on Saturday, February 22, 2025. We came together with a powerful message voicing support for aggressively accelerating greenhouse gas reductions and creating local solutions that secure a liveable future for all. With the County Board's approval of the Climate Action Resolution, Arlington is on its way to becoming a leader for local climate action.
Thank you to everyone who spoke to the County Board and at the rally, and to everyone who helped to make this event happen. A huge shout out to high school students, Helen Hass, Alexa Newman, and Eva Vinik who made comments at the County Board meeting --hearing from Generation Z made a strong impression on our elected officials.
This event was co-sponsored by EcoAction Arlington, Defensores de la Cuenca, Elders Climate Action Virginia Chapter, Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions, Sierra Club Potomac River Group, and Third Act Virginia.

Emy Yamamoto and Bill Campbell distributed compost kits purchased with Giving Machine donations. Kits were distributed to residents at the Gates of Ballston. The kits were received enthusiastically, and for an added bonus, two county compost sidewalk bins are nearby. Contact information was collected for a follow-up in a few months to gauge usage.
Volunteers, Staff, and Board members met with interested community members to socialize and get to know each other over snacks at Amazon’s Visitor Landing on February 25. It was a fun evening discussing the many ways to engage as a volunteer. For information on volunteering visit our website.
A big thank you to our awesome volunteers who supported our staff at the Feel the Heritage Festival on February 22. It was a fun event with lots of excitement about the GetGreen Arlington app!
On February 2, Arlington Students for Climate Action hosted a successful free clothing pop-up shop at Washington-Liberty High School, collecting an impressive 1,200 articles of clothing. Of those, 400 items went directly to community members, while the remaining pieces were donated to two Arlington nonprofits and a local Goodwill. This student-led group is sponsored by EcoAction Arlington, FACS, and the Sierra Club Potomac River Group.

Kisha Sogunro, Outreach Manager, attended a wonderful Black History Month program at Cedar Hill, Frederick Douglass’s Home in Anacostia, where she learned that Mr. Douglass planted trees for his first wife. His favorite was the Magnolia tree, which he planted in her honor. Most of the trees were planted in the 1800s and have been cared for by the Park Service ever since. Frederick Douglass's second wife wanted to preserve his home and grounds and donated them to the National Park Service. The National Park Service site offers tours of the grounds and home. Please check their website for updates as information and times may change.
Traveling Lightly: How to Explore the DMV with an Eco-Friendly Mindset
During a webinar with leaders of our county's Climate Policy Office, Barbara Fillip, Energy Master and EcoAction Arlington volunteer, was happily surprised to learn, among other things, that there are local efforts to align business-related, income-generating activities like tourism with a more environmentally conscious approach to tourism.
