Teens can be so great, especially when we --parents, teachers, administrators--
give them the tools to make a difference.
Give Teens the Tools to be
a Best Friend Ever

"Last spring, Jamie Gorman had a panic attack at the mall.

The then-high school sophomore was with a group of friends at Garden State Plaza in Paramus, New Jersey, when she began to feel overwhelmed. Her fingers were tingling. She couldn’t catch her breath. She felt shaky and dizzy.

Her teenage friends sprang into action.

“They were like, ‘Jamie, sit down.’ ‘Jamie, give me your phone — unlock it,’” Gorman recalled in a recent interview at her high school.

“They immediately called my dad so he could talk to me. They found a water bottle for me. They sat with me; they were just there for me.” She said her friends were “very comforting because they were very calm and they were like, okay, we know what to do.” Story by Anna Kamenetz

Parents of Teens: Please read this entire article by Anna Kamenetz of the Hechinger Report. Share it with your teens and preteens and forward it to your children's teachers and administrators. AND scroll down for links to three great workshops on interacting with teens.

Books are great! Some characters inspire me to do better (Maisie Dobbs)! Some make me laugh (Grandma Mazur's chicken scene). Some make mistakes like I do (Anne of Green Gables). Some teach me new ideas, for example a refreshing perspective on history. I like books and I know you do too, so please enjoy the 2023 lists in today's newsletter. There is something for everyone!

Have you seen The Sound of Freedom?
A friend found this 1911 book in a used bookstore.

When I recommended seeing The Sound of Freedom, I didn't realize this beautiful film had such a remarkable back story.

It seems there were powerful forces that didn't want it to be made, much less distributed. I leave it to you to research the struggles to bring this story to light.

Not a single one of us would want our own child to become the victim of child trafficking. What can we parents do to protect all children? One personal response to this challenge: Scroll down to learn about local self-defense classes.
