From Fr. Mike Gabriel

Last Sunday, we celebrated the Ascension of the Lord. The readings reminded us of all our shared commission, “Go into the Whole World proclaiming the Gospel.”

Then Paul’s letter to the Ephesians reminded us of how we’re to live out that job description, “With humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bonds of peace, one body and one Spirit as you were call also to the one hope of your call.”

Today on the Feast of Pentecost: In our first reading from Acts of the Apostle, we are given the Holy Spirit so that we can go and fulfill our mission and proclaim the Good News!

“Come, Holy Spirit, fill our hearts and kindle in them the fire of your love.”

Mary Clare Barker's Retirement Celebration

Mark your calendars! There is no way to say goodbye easily. Our Director of Music, Mary Clare Barker, will celebrate her retirement on Sunday, June 11th.

Mary Clare's musical talent has truly made a significant contribution to our parish. We have been so blessed to sing, clap, listen, and pray over the years to her beautiful music.

As a community, over the weekend of June 10 and 11, we will have an opportunity to show our appreciation to Mary Clare after all the Masses. On June 11, we will have a combined Mass at 10:30 am in church for a special tribute to her.

All are welcome!

Events & Activities at St. Gertrude

listed in chronological order

Congrats to our RCIA Class

Members of our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) class, Manuel Ballester, Tyler Fawbush, Mike Joyce, Sarah Kutz, and Wildaline Serin (pictured), have been working hard since Easter until Pentecost, on this final period of the initiation process.

This time is dedicated to a deeper understanding of God's word, the sacraments, and the lived Christian life, to celebrate the fullness of the Liturgy with the Christian community, to develop closer ties with the faithful, and to discern and recognized their gifts and their call to discipleship.

We are thankful for their dedication and are glad they are part of our faith community.

Refugee & Immigrant Ministry: Helping New Migrants in Chicago

You've all doubtless heard of the ongoing crisis for new arrivals of migrants, often after long, dangerous, and arduous journeys. It's easy to find this overwhelming, or to wonder how to help.

Several members of the parish have been reaching out to people directly, and to other community resources. At present, we have several avenues to help:

1. We are going to support the Sanctuary Working Group, which has years of experience and do direct work related to housing, case management, and legal help.

2. Allen Stryczek is in active discussion with the faith communities that are part of ECRA (Edgewater Community Religious Association), so that we can pool our resources and voice.

3. Donations of the following items can be left in the red EASTER bin outside of the Ministry Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 am- 2:30 pm, Saturdays before and after the 5:00 pm Mass, and Sundays before or after all the Masses:

  • women's sneakers/athletic shoes (sizes 4 - 7, new only)
  • men's sneakers/athletic shoes (sizes 6 - 8, new only)
  • feminine hygiene products
  • stick deodorant
  • disposable wipes

Additional ways to help specifically to migrants at the 24th police district can be found at https://bit.ly/Migrantsin24.

This is just the beginning, but anything can help. You are the heart and soul of this ministry, and your prayers and support are always appreciated.

On behalf of the Refugee and Immigrant Ministry,

~ Denise Goodman

Care for Real Food and Supply Drive in Church, Saturday, May 27, and Sunday, May 28

St. Gertrude will conduct its monthly food drive before and after Masses on Saturday, May 27 and Sunday, May 28.

Care for Real currently serves more than 1,300 families per week (almost double the need from one year ago). At the same time, its share of food donations from the Chicago Food Depository has declined dramatically (from 7,500 lbs. per week to 5,200 lbs. per week).

The timing is important; with summer approaching many school meal programs are suspended, putting local children at increased risk of food insecurity.

We encourage you to leave a sturdy bag (or bags) containing non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, canned meats and fish, pasta, rice or cereal as well as feminine products and deodorant (both male and female). The donations stay in the community to help local individuals, seniors, and families facing hunger.

Thank you for your help!

Deadline for our Summer Teen Mission Experience is This Sunday, May 28

The deadline for this summer's Mission Experience is fast approaching! Registration is due by Saturday, May 28.

Teens in 6th grade (soon-to-be 7th graders) through high school are welcome to take part in this experience, which held from July 10-14. The parish youth group will volunteer from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm with four different Chicagoland organizations, including Care for Real, Misericordia, a soup kitchen, and a public park. Students will be packing food, preparing food, cleaning, and reaching out to the homeless. Please note, participants will always be supervised.

Participants should be dropped off and picked up at the Social Hall. Students need to bring their own lunch, but snacks and water will be provided. Most of the organizations are local, so transportation might not be needed. Otherwise, public transportation will be used.

Every day will begin with a prayer and will end with a moment of reflection on what was done during the day. This is an excellent opportunity to have fun and earn volunteer hours!

There is a $100 fee for the week. A $50 deposit is required at the time of registration. Please note that there are scholarships available!

All participants will receive a t-shirt, water bottle, and a sports drawstring backpack.

To reserve a spot or to get more information, contact Eloy Escamilla at

eescamilla@stgertrudechicago.org.

Second Collection on June 10-11 for Priests’ Health and Retirement

The Priests’ Health and Retirement/PRMAA annual second collection will be June 10 and 11. This collection benefits the healthcare, wellness, and retirement for the priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Your generosity to this special collection directly impacts both the many active and retired archdiocesan priests who we have come to rely on throughout our lives. These men, who have dedicated themselves to ministry, play a significant role in our personal and spiritual lives, providing counsel and guidance as we deal with life’s challenges.

They serve our needs as Catholics from the moment we are baptized until we receive last rites before entering eternal life. And just as we have come to rely on the help of our priests, it is now our turn to show our gratitude and lend them some assistance with their needs.

As we’re all aware, healthcare and retirement costs continue to rise, so there is an urgent need for your gifts to this fund. Your generosity will not only safeguard the health and well-being of our priests, but also support their ability to continue meaningful work in our parish and in the community.

Thank you in advance for your support of the priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago!

A Note from Eloy Escamilla, Pastoral Associate

Dear community of St. Gertrude,

I just want to share with you that I will be away from the parish from June 12 to June 27. I want to take this time for a retreat as I am walking “El Camino” to Santiago the Compostela.

Please, keep me in your prayers so I can have a nice encounter with God.

Growing in Faith

“Spirit of the living God fall afresh on us. Melt us, mold us, fill us, use us. Spirit of the living God fall afresh on us.”

When we were infants, we were welcomed into the church by Baptism through water. Today, on Pentecost Sunday, we are again welcomed into the church by Baptism through the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God is upon us! How does that change our lives?

In today's scripture, Paul tells us that no one can say “Jesus is Lord”, except by the Holy Spirit. We hear also that although we are many parts we are one body. We are one in Spirit. We may or may not ever speak in tongues, but because of the Spirit, we hear, understand, and share God's love with each other in our daily lives. Again in the Gospel, Jesus tells us to "Receive the Holy Spirit".

Are we listening to the Word of God? Life in the Spirit can be challenging. Sometimes we may wonder if we make a difference in someone's life. In those moments, I like to remember the words of Dr. Seuss who said, "To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world".

“Spirit of the living God fall afresh on me. Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me. Spirit of the living God fall afresh on me.”
