When we see bad news
First, did we check our facts? Are they what we think? Why do we think that? How do we know?
If the facts are real, is it possible they reflect some misunderstanding? People seeing something through different lenses? Maybe the other person is provably “wrong.” But maybe we would also be “wrong,” if we were in their shoes?
Maybe the other person is part of a group that we cheerfully label and discount, applying labels instead of treating other humans as individuals.
Maybe we go quickly to seeing the world as a highly threatening place that demands drastic actions.
What makes us happier and healthier?
If you look at the sequence, which reactions would you guess drive human happiness and effectiveness?
Responses starting near the top of the list? Or reactions 4 or 5?
Who do you think is a more welcome guest at the restaurant?
Who do you think is more credible, telling friends about the restaurant?
Who do you want to be?
Happy, welcome and trusted?
Or chronically resentful, avoided, unheard?
Which will you choose?
