MSU Extension welcomes Mackenzie Meerschaert
My name is Mackenzie Meerschaert and I am the new student intern for MSU Extension and the Apple Community Education Initiative! I am going into my third year at Michigan State University, studying Psychology with minors in Cognitive Science and Communicative Sciences and Disorders.

As an intern for the Apple Community Education Initiative, I will be delivering and assisting with educational programs for youth to explore Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, or Math (STEAM) focused projects using Apple technology. I am beyond excited to join the team at MSU Extension and for the opportunity to provide resources to the community!

4-H Woodworking Workshop - June 16th
Join the Macomb County 4-H Youth Council for a countywide woodworking workshop on Friday, June 16th. We will be making wooden robots to sit on your desk or shelf. This project is suitable for cloverbuds and beginners (no power tools) as well as those looking for an intermediate project that uses power tools.

Registration is required by June 5th and cost is $10/participant. Please see the registration page for full program details. 
Cash Composition Contest and Money Smarts Contest winners announced
Congratulations to Macomb County 4-Hers Anton Akrough and Brennan Fordyce for winning this year’s Show Your Money Smarts Contest! This competitive contest was open to Michigan youth ages 13-19. The contest involved answering 30 questions on credit, and youth had to score 75% or higher to win. Thanks to a generous sponsorship from the Michigan Credit Union Foundation, each of the nine winners won a $25 e-gift card. We are proud of you, Anton and Brennan!

Coming soon: 4-H Coffee Cart and Shaving Sales sign-up information
Watch for sign-up and sales links to be announced soon for the 4-H Coffee Cart and 4-H Shavings Sales fundraisers at the Armada Fair. Shavings will be available for pre-order and for purchase on-site. Each club participating in the Armada Fair is encouraged to sign up for a volunteer shift.

Livestock Parking Passes: Livestock parking passes for the 2023 Armada Fair will be $25.

Parent Armbands: Parent armbands will be available in the Armada Fair Office in June.

Armada Fair Livestock Tagging Dates: Market livestock must be tagged at the Armada Fairgrounds in Armada on the scheduled date and time. The most updated tagging information may be found on the Armada Fair website.

Register for the 2023 State 4-H Shooting Sports Tournament
The 2023 State 4- H Shooting Sports Tournament is once again returning to Centerline of Calhoun County on August 19! This annual event provides Michigan 4-H shooting sports members with the opportunity to test their skills and earn recognition with other 4-H members from all over the state.

Registration will be opening soon and closes July 16. For registration information, tournament rules or additional information, visit the 4-H State Shooting Sports Tournament website.
2023 Michigan 4-H Mark of Excellence Award winners 
Every year, counties across Michigan offer 4-H youth ages 11 and 12 the opportunity to participate in the Michigan 4-H State Awards’ 4-H Mark of Excellence essay contest. The essay theme is “Because of 4-H, I can…” and the youth refer to a variety of memorable experiences in their time as 4-H’ers. 

As part of the contest, up to two 4-H youth essays from each county are selected to be recognized as award winners. In 2023, the following 11 4-H members from nine counties were selected as the 2023 Mark of Excellence county winners:

Community service project: Make dresses for young girls in Tanzania - June 16th
Join the 4-H Head, Heart, and Hands for the Health of Tanzania Sew Along on Friday, June 16, 2023 at 2 p.m. to make pillowcase dresses to send to little girls in Tanzania. The goal is for us to make and send 100 dresses. This is a good project for beginners AND you get to support a worthy cause!
 
You will need the following items to participate in the sew along:

  • Sewing Machine
  • Iron and ironing surface
  • One child size tank top (optional)
  • Two standard size cotton pillowcases washed and ironed.
  • 2-3 yards of grosgrain ribbon OR one package of extra wide double fold bias tape
  • Sheet of Paper
  • Pencil
  • Pins
  • Scissors

Twenty-three Michigan 4-H volunteers honored for 50 years of service

As generations came together for Join Hands Day on May 6, MSU Extension celebrated 23 volunteers who united with youth for half a century. These individuals have provided 50 or more years of service to Michigan 4-H and youth in their communities.

“Volunteers are critical to many of our MSU Extension programs,” said Quentin Tyler, director of MSU Extension. “While we owe a debt of gratitude to all our volunteers, these 23 individuals in particular have made a remarkable impact. They have given their time and talent to 4-H for five decades. We truly cannot thank them enough.”

In recognition of their service, 50-year volunteers received a gift of appreciation from MSU Extension leadership, as well as a personal note of thanks. The Michigan 4-H 50-year volunteers being recognized in 2023 are:
