Wesley Update

March 24th, 2024

Pastor's Corner

One of the things I constantly tell students is that Wesley is not my ministry, it's theirs. If I'm simply shaping the Wesley into what I want to do, what I'm passionate about then I'm not doing my job. I keep us on track with our mission statement and our values, but I strive to let students guide the ministry.

One of the ways we live this out is through our interns. We have two student interns every semester and they get to decide what their internship looks like. I sit down with each intern at the beginning of the semester and ask them, "what are you passionate about and how can this help the Wesley serve students?"

Instead of having an intern who simply does the jobs I don't want to do or don't have time for (hello cleaning bathrooms), I intentionally work with the interns to create their own job descriptions. What is the intersection of their interests/career goals and the Wesley's mission?

One of the Wesley interns this year, Chloe Lopez, said they were interested in becoming a better project manager and improving their networking skills. We then worked together and created an Event Planning job description. At the end of last semester, Chloe sat down with me to talk about her job and what it means to her.

Since this video was recorded, Chloe has led workshops on Mental Health and Healthy Cooking. She came up with the idea of writing Valentine's Day Cards to folks in retirement homes and are homebound. Each and every day I'm in awe of the way God is at work not just in Chloe's life and work but in all the Wesley students.

May God grant me the peace and strength to step out of the way and let the Holy Spirit flow through students!

Grace and Peace,

Ministry Updates

Cardinal Closet Update

We were closed for Spring Break so our numbers are a bit down from our average but we've received 2 incredibly generous donations this week in addition to our monthly food shipment so we're stocked to the gills right now!

This Week: 164

This Month So Far: 250

Thank you so much to Samantha Ziller and the folks at First UMC Orange for bringing by a fantastic donation, we really truly appreciate it!

Another wonderful thank you to a new partner of ours, Valencia Dotson, for bringing so many hygiene kits! Valencia is a student here at Lamar and runs a nonprofit based out of Houston. You can read more about her and her story here.

We are only able to operate as we are through the support of community members like these two, so a gigantic thank you and please donate if you are able to help as well!

Lunch and Worship

Thank you Charlie Snoek and folks from First UMC Beaumont for bringing our meal of Baked Potatoes this week! Although the weather outside was frightful, students still swam across campus to come to lunch.

If you or your church is interested in providing a meal, please give us a call or email!

Each week Pastor Kyle visits a different church to preach, to teach Sunday School classes, and just to worship alongside people.

I got to spend part of Spring Break visiting friends in College Station and so I worshipped at my college church, A&M UMC.

This church and Pastor Preston Greenwaldt have played an absolutely massive role in helping me not only become the pastor I am today but also the person I am. I learned, I made mistakes, I laughed, I cried, I found God after being lost.

Anytime I go back to visit, I always notice how things have changed. New tile in the sanctuary, a new stage in the Great Hall. But more than that I notice how I've changed.

I remember who I was 10 years ago when I first walked in those doors and I wonder... would 18-year-old Kyle recognize me now? Would 18-year-old Kyle see the ways I've grown and found myself? Notice the scars and battles I've fought? Understand the ways God has been walking alongside me the whole time?

This was a nostalgic trip but more than that, it was an inspiring trip and makes me excited for all the ways God is going to do new things in the next 10 years.
