LATEST UPDATE: What to Expect With Construction

Photo: Crews work to widen the U.S. 69 southbound bridge over 143rd Street in the overnight hours.

Barriers are moving and striping continues throughout the U.S. 69 corridor in preparation for the first major traffic shift in early June. Drivers will see crews continuing work to prepare U.S. 69 between I-435 at 151st Street both north and southbound as part of this process.

The northbound U.S. 69 work at 151st Street has shifted to the outside of the bridge to continue rehabilitation work and begin work in the median. The lane closure in this area is scheduled to be in place through early July.

135th St. Loop Ramp Closure Starting June 2

Starting June 2, the eastbound 135th Street to northbound U.S. 69 loop ramp will close. The ramp will remain closed until mid-November. The detour route will be 135th Street east to Metcalf Ave.; Metcalf Ave. North to 119th Street; then 119th Street west to the U.S. 69 northbound on-ramp.

The ramp closure is necessary to accommodate a traffic shift and bridge construction on U.S. 69. Please note that construction schedules are subject to change. Please watch for updated information on this closure on message boards, text alerts or information from the 69Express project.

135th Street Interchange Closure

Also, on the weekend of June 2, 135th Street will be closed for demolition of the US-69 southbound bridge over 135th Street. The closure will begin 8 p.m. Friday, June 2 and 135th Street will reopen by 6 a.m. Monday, June 5th

During the closure, traffic will be detoured to 143rd street. Access to and from U.S. 69 interchange ramps will remain open. Expect delays in this area during the closure and choose alternate routes to reach your destination.

Please note that construction schedules are subject to change.

Watch for updated information on this closure on message boards, text alerts or information from our project or website at 69Express.org

What is a Rolling Closure?

Rolling closures are being used on a limited basis along U.S. 69. A “rolling closure” takes place when designated vehicles with flashing lights pull in front of traffic to slow traffic. These vehicles can be construction vehicles, highway patrol or local police. Rolling closures can allow the contractor to move equipment or supplies across a roadway or conduct an operation that could be potentially dangerous to traffic away from live traffic without a full road closure. These rolling closures are usually short in duration, often only a few minutes but always less than 15 minutes in duration.

When you see trucks with their lights on ahead of you, be sure to slow down and be prepared to brake. Please be aware when you drive through the corridor, that you are driving through a live construction site. Be mindful of your surroundings and fellow drivers.
