Milpitas Elementary Olympics video highlights from 2023
More than 600 third through sixth grade students representing our 10 elementary schools competed in eight Olympic-style events in the return of our Milpitas Elementary Olympics (MEO). This highlights video, produced by the Santa Clara County Office of Education, exemplifies the importance of such a community event.

RECOGNITIONS
2023 Milpitas HS Valedictorian Theanh Nguyen
Milpitas HS Cadet/Petty Officer First Class and UCLA-bound Theanh Nguyen was honored by the MUSD Board of Education and District Leadership for being an outstanding student-athlete, NJROTC leader and the 2023 Milpitas HS Valedictorian at the June 27 meeting. Nguyen T held many NJROTC leadership positions over the last four years including Platoon Commander, Training Officer, and Operations Officer. He competed on the MHS Swim Team, is an accomplished piano player, and is a member of the Boy Scouts.
City of Milpitas Fire Chief Jason Schoonover
Milpitas Fire Chief Jason Schoonover was recognized by the MUSD Board of Education and District Leadership for his recent promotion to Fire Chief for the City of Milpitas and continued service to our MUSD community. Schoonover became Milpitas’ new Fire Chief on March 27, after working at Milpitas FD for the past decade. He served as a Battalion Chief in 2013 and was promoted to Deputy Chief in 2022.

KLA Foundation, Blach Construction and iReady Curriculum Associates were recognized by the MUSD Board of Education and District Leadership for supporting our MUSD community as sponsors for the 2023 Milpitas Elementary Olympics.

MUSD stalwart David Grundstrom promoted
to supervisor role within MOT Department
Superintendent Cheryl Jordan introduced MUSD team member David Grundstrom as the district's new Supervisor of Transportation/Vehicle Maintenance/Grounds & Safety at the June 27 meeting.

"I'm excited to take what I learned as a Staff Sergeant in the military and apply it to my new position," said Grundstrom, who has served two tours in Iraq before joining the MUSD team nearly two decades ago. His wife and son both attended MUSD schools. "I appreciate this opportunity. ...I will always show kindness and inclusion to people who have also shown me kindness and inclusion."
New Russell Principal Shangrila Mia-Ramzan introduces herself to MUSD community
New Thomas Russell Middle School Principal Shangrila Mia-Ramzan, an equity-focused educator with more than two decades of work in TK-8 school administration including the last five as principal of Pearl Zanker Elementary School, introduced herself to the broader MUSD community at the June 27 meeting.

"Middle School is a very unique time in a learner's development as students begin to reflect more deeply on their personal identity, the impact that they would like to make in their community, and pathways that they would like to explore to achieve their academic and professional goals," said Principal Mia-Ramzan, whose three children were promoted through TRMS.

"Throughout my career, I have kept students at the heart of my work," she continued. "It is my firm belief that all students can achieve rigorous goals if they are supported in an environment that they feel seen and heard, and are empowered to have agency in their educational journey."
Human Relations director reviews MUSD
hiring practices in study session
Director of Human Relations Damon James, who will be starting his new role as Interim Assistant Superintendent of Human Relations, led a study session presentation on Hiring Practices in MUSD. Director James outlined the current hiring practices, offered a glimpse into screening of candidates and detailed the interview process for the Board and community.
