“For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”
-Jeremiah 31:34
It is one of the strangest promises in all of Scripture. It came from the God of all creation; the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; the God who parted the sea and turned water into wine. This unparalleled promise came from the God who walked on a lake, made blind men see, and resurrected a dead little girl. What was the promise?
God said he would remember to forget.
God’s people continuously disobeyed God, but through the prophet Jeremiah, God offered a new covenant, and this covenant will last forever.
33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel
after that time,” declares the Lord.
“I will put my law in their minds
and write it on their hearts.
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.
34 No longer will they teach their neighbor,
or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’
because they will all know me,
from the least of them to the greatest,”
declares the Lord.
“For I will forgive their wickedness
and will remember their sins no more.”
-Jeremiah 31: 33-34
God’s words of assurance and hope come to fruition through Jesus who took our sins upon his cross giving his “life as a ransom for many.” Jesus paid the price for me and you and now we live for Him. Yes, God promises to forgive and forget our sins, and he does.
See you Sunday, I can’t wait!
