Human Factors Implications of President Trump’s Executive Orders | Since President Donald Trump took office on January 20, a series of executive actions have shaken the research community. These included targeting diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), federal science funding, civil servant workforce, the regulatory environment and climate initiatives. This is a rapidly changing situation that HFES is monitoring and responding to as needed to help protect programs relevant to human factors/ergonomics professionals. | |
To my human factors/ergonomics colleagues and the HFES community
The last month has been an unprecedented time of stress and upheaval for many if not most of us—personally and professionally. Many of the executive orders have fundamentally challenged and diminished the ability of HF/E researchers and practitioners to do their work. Others have struck at the fundamental principles of HF/E and the vision of HFES to create designs that work for all individuals.
HFES' role is not to be political in this type of circumstance. However, it is our role and responsibility to advocate for those actions that support our mission, vision and strategic goals. This is not just a responsibility we have to our members, it is a responsibility we have to those who lives we all touch through our research, design and practice. The world is a safer and better place because of the work we do and HFES’ role is to continue to advocate for us to be able to do that work.

HFES is excited to share our volunteers of the month, nominated by committee chairs to recognize their efforts. Congratulations to the three volunteers for January. |
John Kleber
Training Technical Group (TTG)
Dr. John Kleber, the TTG's communications chair, has put a lot of effort in highlighting the TTG's successes for the last month or so, worked on sharing newsletter items, updates on the TTG leadership team and TTG members spotlights.

Nohra Murad
Local Chapters
Nohra has been amazing with helping us to understand the needs of the local chapters. She created a survey for distribution at ASPIRE2024, to help people learn about their local chapters. She conducted interviews with many current and past leaders and created a comprehensive report. She made recommendations that were implemented to the chapter section of the HFES website. She is organizing a repository of materials for current and future leaders. She has truly been invaluable!
|
Megan Salwei
Health Care Technical Group (HCTG)
Megan is the current HCTG awards and scholarship chair. She has been a critical team member, stepping up to help with other officers' tasks, no matter if they are related to her role and responsibilities, or just are for the good of the technical group.
She has helped to proof newsletters, student affairs efforts (which she previously chaired), awards, etc. Often, she has helped with items that have quick turn around time, sometimes even when she is out of office.
Her dedication and effort are commendable!

Aakash Yadav
Human, Artificial Intelligence and Robot Teaming (HART) Technical Group
The HART Technical Group recognizes Aakash Yadav, a PhD student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Aakash shared his research at our TG's January membership discussion meeting by giving a talk titled "Trust in multi-human-robot teams: a neuroergonomics approach" and leading the subsequent meeting discussion. Aakash also volunteered to be the HART webmaster and has been making a lot of great updates and changes to our website.

Our Newest Corresponding Member: Tara Monti |
The Foundation for Professional Ergonomics has initiated a program to sponsor HFES memberships for HF/E students and professionals residing outside the United States. We are very pleased to introduce a new HFES member from the second group of recipients.
"Hello, my name is Tara Monti. I have B.A., Hon. kinesiology and physical education from Wilfrid Laurier University (2011) and Hon. diploma in occupational health and safety management from University of Western Ontario (2012). In 2016, I obtained my Canadian registered safety professional license.
Currently, I am a senior EHS technologist at 3M, in London Ontario, Canada. My primary areas of focus are ergonomics and industrial hygiene in manufacturing operations, research and development laboratories as well as warehousing operations. In this role, I educate and provide ergonomic training as well as complete ergonomic assessments, physical demands analysis, provide advice on risk prioritization and work with engineering and employees on the development and implementation of risk reduction strategies and solutions.
The primary motivation for use of this membership will be to advance my knowledge and understanding, through credible resourcing and apply this knowledge directly to the application in the facilities which I have ergonomic responsibility. Membership would also serve to provide potential networking relationships with other professionals, across the globe."
Please contact us at info@ergofoundation.org to nominate a recipient or to donate to support this program.
