STORIES OF SERVICE

Everyday Young Hero: Matthew Vila

Matthew Vila (16, Miami, Florida) is creating accessible music education for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Many traditional music programs are not designed to accommodate the unique learning styles and sensory needs of individuals with IDD, leaving a gap in inclusive artistic opportunities. Matthew’s journey began when he joined Best Buddies International during his freshman year of high school. He knew he had found something unique in disability advocacy, and over the last couple of years, he has served in several organizational leadership positions. Recognizing the opportunity to merge his two passions -- music and disability advocacy -- he founded Harmony Hugs to create an inclusive space where individuals of all abilities could experience the joy of music. Now in seven institutions across South Florida, Matthew leads a team of 40+ student-musicians to provide weekly adaptive music lessons.

To grow his efforts, Matthew has secured over $5,000 in grants from the Guitar Center Music Foundation, allowing for the donation of instruments to underserved children. As part of his role as the youngest 2024 Miami Champion of the Year Candidate for Best Buddies, he launched a city-wide campaign to raise $17,000 for the integration of music and arts programs within the organization.

Matthew's efforts not only provide direct support for individuals with disabilities but also inspire a broader movement toward inclusion in the arts. Seeing a world of infinite opportunity ahead of Harmony Hugs, Matthew, still only a Junior in high school, hopes to expand to five more locations by the time he graduates. An aspiring doctor, Matthew plans to delve into research on the broader medical implications of music therapy and maintain close ties to the special needs community regardless of where his future takes him.

Next month, students across the state will present their projects to the Minnesota Zoo to help them address real-world problems. This year, the focus is on white-cheeked gibbons, which is a critically endangered species.

“Every year, it’s a different real, authentic zoo-based challenge that we have students solve,” said Kristi Berg, STEM specialist with the Minnesota Zoo. It’s called the ZOOMS STEM Design Challenge. Over the years, students in grades 3 through 12 have helped the zoo by putting together a project. It could be new enrichment opportunities for animals or re-designing a habitat.

How to Teach Hope When Democracy is Retreating

"Some teachers take students to engage in community work that is deeply tied to the curriculum, through approaches known as action civics or service learning. But when young people take on social action projects — especially those aimed at addressing systemic injustices — the experience can backfire if it leads only to frustration and failure. ... To counter this despair, we need to redefine what it means to hope. We need to cultivate the kind of hope that sustains action despite uncertainty — the kind that fuels long-term struggles for justice, even when victories are slow in coming."
