Florida's Latest Data on
Safety, Health & Sustainability
|
|
According to the Florida Chamber Safety Council's Florida Workplace Safety Report released in 2020:
Safety
Unfortunately, the State of Florida stopped participating in the BLS Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (SOII) in 2011. The other form of BLS workplace safety data focuses on nonfatal workplace incidents. These incidents are injuries and illnesses that occur or are acquired while on the job. While not a perfect tool for accounting for all workplace incidents in an economy, the BLS data does provide a more consistent methodology that enables comparison across all states. Florida and only five other states do not participate in SOII currently. Without SOII data, we could not assess Florida’s nonfatal workplace incidents. In states where data is available, nonfatal injuries and illnesses account for most workplace safety events. Without the SOII data on nonfatal incidents, worker compensation data provided some limited insight into workplace injuries and illnesses.
Health
Certain forms of medical marijuana were legalized in Florida in 2016, and medical marijuana became legal in 2019. Thirty-four states have legalized marijuana for medical use, and 11 have legalized recreational use. The ever-changing status of marijuana use has created conundrums in the workplace. Currently, a Florida employee with a medical marijuana license can only use on-site if the company agrees. Florida law does not require accommodations for medical marijuana use at employment sites. Marijuana is still included in the Drug-Free Workplace Act, which means that employers that want to receive a 5% discount on workers’ compensation premiums must still have a zero-tolerance policy towards marijuana. Currently, in Florida, injured workers cannot receive reimbursements for medical marijuana treatment related to their workplace incidents. These policies may come under review or change in the coming years as attitudes toward marijuana usage and legalization continue to evolve. On the horizon in Florida is the prospect of full recreational use as a group has already bankrolled $20 million to put recreational marijuana on the ballot during the 2024 Presidential Election.
Sustainability
Natural resources and parks provide an accessible source for people to connect with the natural environment and promote physical and mental health. Spending on natural resources and parks can enhance the economy and protect the ecosystems of an area from pollution. Florida ranks 30th in the nation and spends less state money per capita on natural resources and parks than the national average.
