From Fr. Mike Gabriel

This weekend, we celebrate the first of two interesting feasts that come each year as well as the return to Ordinary Time following the Feast of Pentecost. The first is Trinity Sunday, and the second following week, The Body and Blood of Christ.

Every Sunday is a celebration of the Trinity, as we, at the Eucharist, pray to the Father, through the Son, in the Holy Spirit. And of course, the celebration of the Body and Blood of Christ, since the thanksgiving sacrifice that is the Eucharist revolves around the transformation of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of our Savior, along with the reception of the Eucharist by God’s people.

So, when the Church gives us the Feast of the Holy Trinity and the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, she is inviting us to reflect on and rejoice in two aspects of our faith that are present every time we gather for Mass.

We celebrate the resurrection of Christ every Sunday, but Easter focuses our attention in a special way. So, like today, Trinity Sunday, we reflect on the mystery we affirm every time we make the sign of the cross. “So we begin, as we begin all good things, In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”

Mary Clare Barker's Retirement Celebration

Please join us next weekend as we celebrate our Director of Music, Mary Clare Barker, who is retiring after many years of service.

Mary Clare's musical talent has truly made a significant contribution to our parish. We have been so blessed to sing, clap, listen, and pray over the years to her beautiful music.

On June 10 and 11, we will have an opportunity to show our appreciation to Mary Clare after all the Masses. On June 11, we will have a combined Mass at 10:30 am in church for a special tribute to her.

We hope to see you there!

Second Collection on June 10-11 for Priests’ Health and Retirement

The Priests’ Health and Retirement/PRMAA annual second collection will be June 10 and 11. This collection benefits the healthcare, wellness, and retirement for the priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Your generosity to this special collection directly impacts both the many active and retired archdiocesan priests who we have come to rely on throughout our lives. These men, who have dedicated themselves to ministry, play a significant role in our personal and spiritual lives, providing counsel and guidance as we deal with life’s challenges.

They serve our needs as Catholics from the moment we are baptized until we receive last rites before entering eternal life. And just as we have come to rely on the help of our priests, it is now our turn to show our gratitude and lend them some assistance with their needs.

As we’re all aware, healthcare and retirement costs continue to rise, so there is an urgent need for your gifts to this fund. Your generosity will not only safeguard the health and well-being of our priests, but also support their ability to continue meaningful work in our parish and in the community.

Thank you in advance for your support of the priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago!

Dear community of St. Gertrude,

Please, keep me in your prayers so I can have a nice encounter with God.

Growing in Faith

I’d like to share some reflections on Paul’s parting thoughts to the Church at Corinth, especially about mending our ways, and encouragement.

Mending our ways … involves a lot of forgiveness, both of ourselves and each other. How important is forgiveness? Celebrity Dolly Parton gave an inspiring response when asked whether she could ever forgive Porter Wagoner, who had hurt her deeply and repeatedly.

Dolly’s reply: “Forgiveness is all there is!” Dolly found a way to stand for her beliefs without mistreating Porter. That’s a great model for us in the care of our own souls, and of others, whether adversaries or friends.

Encouragement … is important, but how important? Interestingly enough, social scientists have found a way to measure the value of these acts.

• One simple affirmation before a test can help minority students overcome the adversity of a stereotype threat – erasing the performance impact of prejudice. (Please see the works Claude Steele, and his references.)

• People who are encouraged in their jobs become engaged, and their employee engagement drives productivity as much as 70 % higher. (Please see Follow This Path, by Curt Coffman and Gabriel Gonzalez-Molina, Ph.D.)

Mending our ways, forgiveness, and encouragement build individuals and communities.

The Parish Garden Has Been Planted!

Thank you to all who helped plant our parish garden last weekend! Led by Mary Clare Barker, the team worked hard to make the garden beautiful, with veggies and

herbs planted.

The produce grown from our garden will be shared with both Care for Real and the St. Thomas of Canterbury soup kitchen!

We are looking for people to help with the daily watering of our garden. If you can assist, please reach out to Mary Clare Barker at mcbarker@stgertrudechicago.org.
