State Field Day Registration is now open

California 4-H State Field Day

May 27, 2023

Join us at UC Davis for State Field Day on May 27th! Learn, Thrive and Grow at this day of competitions, picnicking and family fun.

We regret that registration has been delayed due to recent UCANR server outages. To accommodate this delay, the registration deadline for all contests is May 12th. Exception: Virtual State Presentation Events are being held earlier so the deadline for VIRTUAL Presentation Events is April 30, 2023.

SFD 2023-Learn Thrive Grow

See what’s new this year:

  • A universal registration system for all contests. ONE registration link for all contest participants, evaluators and room hosts!

  • We are asking EVERYONE to register: attendees, evaluators, room hosts, family members who are observing, young siblings—anyone who is attending SFD.
  • Why? We know how many youth register each year but don’t know how many total people attend. We want to get a complete head count for planning future State Field Days.

  • There is a $5 flat fee for 4-H member participants. 4-H members may sign up for as many contests as they plan to participate in for the one fee.
  • Why? The fee will help cover the costs of this event, such as facilities, certificates, pins, awards, supplies, printing, lunches for volunteers, etc.
  • Any member who is unable to pay the $5 entry free may turn in a Request for Fee Waiver Form to 4hsfd@ucanr.edu

  • New contest: Forestry. Test your knowledge about forestry topics and learn more about how you can get involved with a Forestry project.

  • Insect Identification Contest. The Insect Identification Contest (aka Entomology Contest) is back in a new format. Sign up and see the insect display from the UC Davis Bohart Museum of Entomology.

And there’s so much more! Now that we’re back fully in person, we will also have interactive activity booths, Primary Activities, a Film Festival screening, and even a short Fashion Revue show! The Awards Ceremony will be hosted by our State Ambassadors live on the California 4-H YouTube channel on Sunday, May 28th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

If you have any questions about State Field Day or qualifying events, please email 4hsfd@ucanr.edu, or the respective contest coordinator listed on each contest page.

Range Camp 2023

Range Camp

June 18-23, 2023

Elkus Ranch, Half Moon Bay

Range Camp is an environmental science & management camp for high school students from across California. The camp takes place at the University of California’s Elkus Youth Ranch in Half Moon Bay, CA, and is in person again for 2023.

Range Camp is a 6-day camp experience for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors who have an interest in the science and conservation management of natural resources in California. Students get an introduction to ecological principles, including characteristics and interrelationships of plants and animals, fire ecology, hydrology, geology and soils, and management of grassland, brushland, forest, and stream and river ecosystems. Field activities include learning to read wildlife ‘sign’, learning outdoor navigation with compasses, maps and GPS, forest management, visits to working ranches and conservation projects, and a beach BBQ.

The camp is organized by the University of California Cooperative Extension, with support from a variety of institutions, including university faculty and students from the University of California and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, the California Association of Resource Conservation Districts, and numerous other agriculture and conservation organizations.
