Commonwealth Corps & The Nevins Library
The Nevins Memorial Library is excited to announce it has been selected as one of 16 Commonwealth Corps host site partners in the 2023-2024 program year. Administered by the Massachusetts Service Alliance (MSA), the Commonwealth Corps is a state-funded service internship program that engages Massachusetts residents of all ages, backgrounds, and identities in service to strengthen communities, address critical community needs, and increase volunteerism.

Serving a 10-month term, Corps members provide direct service; build capacity; and recruit, organize, and mobilize additional volunteers, thus building a grassroots movement of volunteers dedicated to service. The Nevins Library will host two Commonwealth Corps members to support and grow the literacy program by working directly with volunteer tutors and adult learners.

The Nevins Library is proud to partner with the Commonwealth Corps for the first time to enhance our mission of ensuring access to technology and materials that assist with learning and living, promoting literacy for all ages, and creating positive experiences that enrich lives and connect our communities. We are very excited to welcome our Commonwealth Corps service members to the Nevins community.
The More You Know: Library Cards
A Nevins Library Card is free to all Methuen residents, City of Methuen employees, and to those who pay property tax to the City of Methuen. The card grants you access to the thousands of books (both in print, audio, and downloadable), DVDs, kits, library of things items, databases, museum passes and more at the Nevins Library.

All you need to do to get your card is visit the library with a photo ID and proof of your current Methuen address. Also note that once you have it, the card will need to be renewed every 3 years. Please try to always bring your library card with you to check out materials, or at least a photo ID so we can look up your account. Other options would be to take a photo of your card on your phone, or download the MVLC Mobile app from your phone's app store. In the app there is a place to load your card (and we can help set that up if you have questions!). Even better, if you're a parent with small children, you can connect your children's cards to yours all in the app.

Also please remember that if you need someone to pick up something for you at the library you'll need to give them your card, or call us ahead of time to let us know so we know we have your permission to give your holds to someone else other than you.

As always, if you have any questions, please just give us a call: 978-686-4080 or email: contactcirc@nevinslibrary.org.

What's Happening in Youth Services?
We Have Even More Great Summer Programs in July!!
Our summer is off to a great start, with lots of fun programs last month and even more in store for July! In July you can look forward to a wonderful array of special programs, including lively drum circles with musician Otha Day, Little Spark Theater workshops, Amazing Hero Art with master painter Rob Surette, Kathak Dance lessons, Incredible Earthworms, robots Pepper and SPOT from Merrimack College, and Native American storyteller Leland Faulkner. We’ve had record numbers of people signing up for our special events, but keep in mind that it’s always worth putting your name on a program’s Wait List if registration is full –we’re often able to open events up to more people.

We’ll also feature a series of “Find Your Voice” programs, where kids have a variety of ways to express themselves creatively (including a costume party, making friendship bracelets and mason jar frames, improv, silent disco, and more), as well as the return of our Nevins Ink writing summer workshop series. Plus we have many of our regular programs ongoing throughout the summer, as well as a fun Stuffed Animal Sleepover and a Glow Party – and of course our Friday morning Little Bookworms storytime!

Just to add even more fun to the summer, we’ve got snazzy beads to offer kids when they participate in our summer programs and contests –just come by the Children’s Room to get registration packets and to start a Bead Bonanza collection. (Your child doesn’t have to be school-age to participate and to earn beads and badges, by the way.)

Keep an eye on the Youth Services calendar and the Children’s Room Facebook page to learn the latest about upcoming programs and special events – there’s so much fun ahead!

Happy July, and Happy Reading!
