I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits as we prepare for the 4th of July holiday! I'm writing to express my heartfelt gratitude for your incredible support and dedication to Adopt A Golden Atlanta (AGA). Your unwavering commitment to our mission of rescuing and finding homes for Golden Retrievers forever in need has profoundly impacted countless dogs' lives.
As we embark on a new chapter in AGA's journey, I'm thrilled to announce an exciting development within our organization. We have appointed a new Co-President, Patti Dickey, who will join forces with me to lead AGA into a brighter future. Patti brings a wealth of experience, passion, and expertise to the organization, and I'm confident that a collaborative leadership approach between us will further elevate AGA's impact and reach.
Patti will be taking the helm in overseeing our day-to-day operations, ensuring the smooth functioning of our programs and initiatives. This Summer, Make These Mini Hot Dog Treats for Your Pup
|
|
What better way to celebrate the Fourth of July than with a backyard BBQ? And don’t forget about your pup! There’s no reason to keep your party pup away from the festivities, especially when they can have their very own on-theme DIY dog treats to chow down on.
To help celebrate Independence Day with your favorite “hot dog,” try this easy homemade dog treat recipe. These adorable hot dog dog biscuits are so good that they’ll have your patriotic pup parading around in glory like the star they are! And don’t be surprised if the other pups on the block come marching to your kitchen, declaring their own bark-worthy barbecue-themed dog treats.
Remember, as with any human food, pet parents looking to incorporate new foods in their dog’s diet should consult with their veterinarian beforehand.

Check Your Dog Once A Month on the 14th!

Facts about Cancer in Dogs
Did you know that 1 in 3 dogs will be diagnosed with cancer? 50% of those dogs will die from cancer. In humans, there are 1.5 million new cases of cancer each year, but in dogs, there are 6 million new cases of cancer diagnosed each year. Dog cancer prevention is key to a long healthy life with your dog.
It is important that you start your fight against canine cancer and any other health issue from the day you bring your dog home. Checking your dog once a month for lumps and bumps or any abnormal behavior is key in the prevention of any health issue with your dog. We recommend doing it on the 14th of every month. Checking your dog will be a great little bonding time with your dog. If you are starting with a young dog, this time will also prepare them for their future vet wellness visits.
|
|
Now how exactly do you do this?
Start at their nose and work all the way to their tail. Make sure you are in a familiar, low-key environment where you and your pet can do this without distraction. In other words, not during dinner time or when you expect the mailman to be buzzing by the house.
Also, make sure you keep a journal of each of your Check Your Dog days so you will have notes to compare with should something arise.

LIVE FROM AGA CENTRAL!
I just had the best news ever! My new angel Mark Hansford donated $750 to pay for my heartworm treatment. I never met him so we don’t know each other but what is nicer than a stranger helping a poor dog?
Well, that’s just what angels do and I was lucky…

Fireworks and Your Pet:
Tips for Staying Safe
|
|
On and around the Fourth of July, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) sees an increase in calls concerning pets who have ingested fireworks or are having issues due to the loud noises they make.
However, with a little planning, you can ensure that your four-legged friends enjoy the holiday just as much as you do.
If your pet has a fear of or aversion to loud noises:
- Something as simple as turning on some soft music and moving your pet into an interior room with no windows can be helpful.
- An anxiety vest may work in some cases—if you don’t have one, try a snugly fitting t-shirt.
- If you and your veterinarian do decide that anti-anxiety mediation is your pet’s best bet, there are a few things to remember. First and foremost, give a practice dose of the medication before the big night to see how your pet responds to the medication. Second, never share the medication with another pet or give more than the recommended amount. If you do, you may end up spending the holiday at your local veterinary emergency clinic.
- While noise phobias are not as common in cats, they can and do happen. Fortunately, cats tend to hide when frightened. Checking in on your cats, having some quiet music on and keeping them indoors during the height of the fireworks is always a good idea.
If your pet is the type to taste new and unusual things:
- While cats are typically a little smarter than this, some dogs will eat anything, regardless of how it tastes—including fireworks! Never underestimate your pet’s level of curiosity.
- Fireworks contain several types of chemicals and heavy metals. If you set off fireworks at home, make sure you thoroughly clean up the area before letting your dog have access again.
