President's Message

The one passion all the owners have shared over the past century is the preservation of this historical ranch. This winter, sitting under a palm tree, I have drawn up the wording for a new plaque for the entrance of the General store.

Welcome to the Flying U Ranch Canada’s oldest Ranch. Established in 1849.

This is where the art of horseback riding finds its home and where we work to deliver each ride with love and dedication. This is a place filled with more than 170 years of history. At the Flying U we not only celebrate the art of horseback riding, but we also honour the legacy of this historic place. Every corner, every cabin, breathes history. Every trail echoes the spirit of riders gone before. Welcome to the Flying U Ranch where each visit is a connection to the past, a past that we continue to write.

Largest Ever Group Of Returning Staff

The backbone of the Flying U is the great group of returning staff. Victoria, our head wrangler, is back and Angela our assistant head will be right there too. Cowboy Steve will be back again larger than life. He is an institution in these parts. Lori is back for the new season moving into the office to head up the administration. Ariel returns year after year and does everything from wrangling to archery. Kyle, our terrific cook, is back in the kitchen with his wonderful culinary skills. Will is returning in 2024 to keep the ranch trails, fencing, and cabins in tip-top shape. Maggie will be back in housekeeping. Dan Fremlin is back, to work tirelessly on everything from farrier work to leading our Saturday night band. Returning wranglers are Daphne, Connie, and Jessie from BC and Tyler from the UK. Nancy is back in accounting working tirelessly to pay the bills and keep the bookkeeping in order. To put this in perspective 9 years ago when the business was purchased, we started with only 2 returning staff members!

Back in the early days of the ranch, most guests came to enjoy the ranch on one-week stays. (Also, it’s very common for the leading ranches south of the border to offer vacations solely on one-week stays!) We began a couple of years ago to offer 5 days for the 4-day rate and 7 days for the 5-day rate. This brings the per diem rates down by 20% and 28% respectively This makes it so much easier on the herd and wranglers to get to know the rider. Also, there is so much more to do with the extra time. From world-class riding to golf shuttles to fishing and just lazy days on beautiful Green Lake. If you have already booked, just give us a call and we will work with you to add time to your stay.

10. We offer a free shuttle service to the 108 golf resort. Perfect 18-hole golf course for the spouse looking for something extra.

9. It costs very little extra to upgrade to an executive house. Some restrictions apply. First Come first served.

8. The Flying U dock is a federally licensed water drome for a float-equipped aircraft. 

7. Horses tend to live longer lives at the Flying U. Being in a herd they can build strong bonds and getting to live out in the pasture is amazing for them. Duzie and Spanky are 2 of our older horses at 32 and 33 years old this year! They have been at the Flying U since 1994!

6. We have approximately 2500 guests who visit the Ranch every year. Roughly half preregister for the next season by the end of October! The rest mostly book in the winter/spring.

5. Two staff members have had TV and movie experience. Cowboy Steve has played bad guys in action movies. John was the Presenter/Pilot on Wings Over Canada TV.

4. The ranch is situated on a plateau that is 3500 ft. This is ideal for keeping daytime temperatures low and evenings cool for sleeping.

3. The ranch may be the oldest continually running business in the province of BC. Since 1849, it has operated every day as a ranch even predating the gold rush! 

2. The ranch offers parking for 10 RVs in a quiet setting overlooking the corrals. These are for guests who are riders who would prefer their own accommodation.
