Welcome
Dear members,

The last few months have seen a lot of activity for EACTP, not least the first of our Educational Workshops which were held at Leiden University at the end of March.

Over two days, delegates came together for a series of hands-on professor-led workshops, live research projects and debates focused on skills enhancement in the areas of Fast Strategy/commercialisation & Risk, Turnaround, Legal, Leadership, culture & governance.

Professor Barry Hedley let the first workshop on Fast Commerciality & Risk which included a lively Dragon’s Den style challenge to make the most successful investment. Congratulations to Alan Tilley, Anton de Leeuw, Matthew Quade, Michiel van de Velde and Daan Noort who made up the winning team.

Workshop 2 on The Future of Turnaround Management was led by Dr Professor Jan Adriaanse who shared insights from academic research on turnaround management before the group discussed what the future might look like for the profession.

Next, a live research project on Governance took place which included an interesting panel discussion between Matthew English, Jan Adriaanse and Eugen Lascu who covered Preventive Leadership, 4A's alert, Adaptability, Anticipation, Change Management ADKAR, Trust in Governance and Disclosure.

On day two, an introduction to US Chapter 11 bankruptcy processes and options was led by Matthew English followed by Professor Mark Watson-Gandy’s legal workshop on sanctions law from a UK perspective and applied to turnaround and restructuring workouts. Participants also got their heads together in highly energetic tripartite debates on sanction-based case studies.

And finally, concluding the day was a Leadership session delivered by Dr Esther van Fenema who looked at high performers’ brain patterns, coping mechanisms, the importance of keeping mentally fit, and how that translates into turnaround.

Our sincere thanks go to all the speakers, attendees and everyone involved in organising such a fantastic inaugural event. We also thank our sponsors Deloitte Italia, Concilium Consulting and GoTo Generator for their support.

A post-event survey had been carried out, to learn more about what other participants thought of the experience. Intro link to survey PDF: click here to view

In the spirit of continued professional education we are also delighted to let you know that we are planning online events in the coming months so please keep an eye out for announcements, we would love to welcome your participation at these events.

New Members
Welcome to our new member Aldo Braccetti who was not only the first candidate to successfully complete the CTA online learning course, but who has already progressed through to become a fully-fledge CTP and member of the EACTP.

Here are a few words Aldo shared about his journey through the CTP course and onto CTP status:

After a decade dedicated to international turnarounds, I wanted to solidify my hand- on experience with further academic knowledge and critically review the outcome of the cases that I had the opportunity to work on. EACTP and Leiden University offered an accreditation program that met all of that and furthermore boosted my financial/legal knowledge and strengthened my management expertise. The first step was the CTA accreditation, the exams are challenging no doubt, however the learning material has been developed as a practical tool kit for professionals which stimulated my learning desire. The preparation cases for the CTP accreditation are demanding, the opportunity to discuss them in depth with experienced CTP assessors was extremely rewarding. Finally, the program admin support has been there for me throughout my journey. I would recommend the EACTP accreditation to anyone at the beginning of their career or as seasoned executive, for me it has been enrichment beyond expectation”.

CTP TALK
An Interview with Matthew Quade, CTP and CEO of TSL
CTP TALK is an interview series where we ask senior CTPs to share details of their careers, motivations, challenges and advice.

In our latest CTP TALK interview, we spoke with Matthew Quade, a CTP, Member of the EACTP, and CEO of TSL. Before taking up the CEO position at TSL in August 2022, Matthew spent the previous 15 years working in leadership positions to transform, improve, and turnaround businesses across a variety of industries. Matthew’s career in turnaround has given him invaluable experience in running companies and he told us how he has used his knowledge of others’ mistakes to avoid making them himself. Read Matthew’s interview here.

If you would like to read more of our CTP TALK interviews, you can find them all published here.

And if you would like to be interviewed for CTP TALK, please email Ana at eactp@turnaround.org to register your willingness to participate.
