Hello from Kate

By now I am sure that my joining Staying Put is old news but your warm welcome has left a heartfelt impression on me. My move from Brooklyn to New Canaan in 2020 was not just a departure from a neighborhood I loved, but an introduction to a new phase of life where my husband and I wanted to watch our daughter grow up in an active and engaged community. New Canaan has done everything but disappoint in that regard. Across all ages and generations, we are in awe of this thriving gem of a town and it has compelled us to engage in kind. In this new role, I have started to make a small dent in getting to know each of you and I thank you for your patience as I continue to make meeting each of you a priority. I have also been tasked with this section of the Staying Put Monthly Newsletter. Here I hope you will find a monthly oasis where all the news, the to-dos, and daily noise can come to a halt, even if just for a moment.

These are my early days but I can say with total confidence and gratitude that the members and friends who make up Staying Put (that’s you!) are remarkable. I thank each of you for the time you have given me, the wisdom you have imparted, and the giggles exchanged. I know there will be many more. So if I can offer any kind of nourishment in return, like you have shown me, this will be the place.

You may (or may not) know that July 18 is recognized as World Listening Day. As someone who prides herself on being a good listener, I have to confess that an entire day dedicated to the subject gave me pause. But rather than resisting these seemingly random demarcations in the calendar, I am

choosing to embrace them. And I wonder if you will take up the challenge with me. The point of World Listening Day is not to remain silent for an entire day (perish the thought), but rather to carve out moments, large or

small, to be open to the environment around us, and open to the words being spoken to us from a loved one, quieting the hum of our own thoughts and agendas. If you find yourself out for a walk, working in your garden, floating in a pool, or just sitting by an open window: How many distinct species of birds do you hear singing outside? Or in another instance: How can the same words we hear from a loved one sound different when we eliminate our interior dialogue? I promise, this July 18th, I will give it a try and can’t wait to learn in what ways our worlds maybe felt or looked just a little bit different because all we decided to do was listen. And if you come back to me and say “Kate, all I heard was the whirring of landscaping…” I hear you.

New Canaan Roadworks Information

Many activities slow down in the summer but in New Canaan, roadworks is not one of them. For an updated list of road closures and paving updates, go to newcanaan.info and click on the orange road constructions link on the top of the page. The Department of Public Works also makes daily updates on their Instagram page: @newcanaandpw

The Green Envelope Program

for Hearing Impaired Drivers

The Green Envelope Program was created to enhance communication between a police officer and a driver who is deaf or hard of hearing. During a traffic stop, the driver places their driver license, registration, and insurance card in the envelope. The envelope provides helpful tips and instructions for both the officer and driver on how to successfully to communicate with each other. Envelopes are available for pick up at the New Canaan Police Department and in the Staying Put office.
