News & Notes, April 2024

 April is National Volunteer Month!

DCLC is incredibly grateful for all of our volunteers – every contribution is important to sustaining and supporting our mission! Our volunteer tutors work one on one with adult learners, helping them learn basic reading and writing or to speak English as a Second Language. We provide all volunteer tutors with a free, comprehensive training program and ongoing support, including books and lesson plans. DCLC also welcomes volunteer tutors as classroom aides. These volunteers work side by side with one of our professional staff instructors, assisting the instructor and students as needed. Thank you, DCLC volunteers! DCLC thrives on the good will and many talents of our generous volunteers.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer tutor, visit www.delcoliteracy.org/volunteer.

Delco Gives 2024

May 8-9, 7 p.m. to 7 p.m.

DCLC is participating in Delco Gives Day, a 24-hour county-wide day of giving where you can make a donation to your favorite nonprofit on the delcogives.org site. Online activity will be accompanied by a number of celebrations held throughout the county, including a big closing celebration at Rose Tree Park and a livestream out of the Union Stadium on May 9th.  Visit www.delcogives.org for more information.

Please join our Delco Gives 2024 campaign TODAY and help us reach our goal of 100 donors! From today until May 8th, donations can be made on our website, and these funds will be counted towards our Delco Gives Day totals if it is indicated that the donation is for Delco Gives Day.

Each donation is eligible for bonus money provided by the Foundation for Delaware County. The more individual donations received, the larger the share of Delco Gives fund dollars. There will also be cash prizes sponsored by local businesses given out throughout the day.

Please consider donating today. And help us spread the word. Share our social media posts on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram and share this email with your network.

DCLC Visits the Brandywine River Museum

Thanks to the generosity of the Brandywine River Museum, students from ESL Instructor Chris Zakorchemny’s class recently experienced “Rooted,” the museum’s current exhibit of illustrated children’s books by eight contemporary artists.

“While the stories are simple in language, they are emotional,” says Zakorchemny. “Many are international or immigrant stories about the enduring bonds of family, which is a compelling topic for my students, many of whom are apart from immediate family members.”

The students who attended the exhibit are from Zakorchemny’s Intermediate and Advanced English as a Second Language classes. “Teacher Chris” – as he is affectionally called by his students – prepared written materials about the exhibit prior to the outing, served as a tour guide by answering questions, and encouraged conversation so that his students could practice their verbal language skills.

“It was a very good day,” said ESL student Aysulu Zholdybaeva, a second-year student. “Thanks for Teacher Chris.

Student Celebration Ceremony!

We can’t wait to celebrate the successes of our students on Monday, May 13th! From GED graduates to citizenship recipients to essay contest prize winners, we will applaud the academic milestones of 30 students. Each achievement is a testament to the resilience and ambition of our learners, and we take immense pride in being part of their transformative journeys. Congrats!

Please join us on Wednesday, October 9th at 6 p.m. for Champions of Adult Literacy; Creating the Next Chapter at Harrah’s Philadelphia Casino and Racetrack, 777 Harrah’s Boulevard, Chester, PA. Since 2013, DCLC has hosted Champions of Adult Literacy, an exciting fundraising event that brings together DCLC’s supporters to raise funds to support DCLC’s free programs for local adults.
