DCCA Social Hour Wrap Up: Racial Injustice in Dupont Circle
On Monday evening DCCA Members attended a fascinating online presentation and discussion by Mara Cherkasky of Prologue DC, a historian specializing in DC neighborhoods, institutions, and agencies.
Her interactive presentation and online chat on the topic of "Racial injustice in the Dupont Circle neighborhood – the story of one block, and more" was thought provoking and many aspects were disturbingly relevant to current times. Mara shared her research which came alive with the backdrop of her historic photos of the neighborhood and its residents. The discussion that followed included members' questions, personal anecdotes, and reflections on where we are today.
The digital public history project Mapping Segregation in Washington DC is looking for volunteers to help research racially restrictive covenants in the DC Recorder of Deeds database. These cov enants were used mostly outside the old city, but there were a few in the Dupont Circle area and downtown. Sifting through old documents (virtually) is not for everyone, but it can be rewarding; in this case your research results would be added to the many maps on the project website, mappingsegregationdc.org, and the project will thank you for your work on the site. Please contact Mara Cherkasky, if you’re interested.
