April is Autism Acceptance Month: Honoring the Full Spectrum of Creativity
|
At Donna Lexa Art Centers, we believe in honoring the full spectrum of human experience through creativity. April is recognized as Autism Acceptance Month—a time to affirm and celebrate neurodiversity, promote inclusion, and support meaningful self-expression for all.
Autism Acceptance Month invites us to move beyond awareness and toward true inclusion. It’s about uplifting voices, celebrating differences, and creating communities where everyone feels seen, valued, and connected. That’s exactly what we strive to do every day in our studios.
DLAC is proud to serve a diverse community of artists, including individuals with autism. We don’t offer a one-size-fits-all approach—our open studio classes are adaptable and responsive, allowing each student to explore their creativity in a way that feels natural and joyful to them. We focus on ability, expression, and the power of the creative process in a supportive, welcoming environment.
This month—and every month—we celebrate the talents, perspectives, and passions of all our students. Their artwork reflects a range of experiences, emotions, and stories, reminding us that creativity knows no bounds. When we make space for everyone to show up authentically, beautiful things happen.
Thank you for helping us build a community rooted in acceptance, inclusion, and the joy of artistic discovery. Together, we #CelebrateDifferences through the transformative power of art.
Plus, in this issue's Creative Corner, we’re excited to highlight Milwaukee Rep’s powerful first-ever bilingual production, Espejos: Clean — an evening of storytelling and connection you won’t want to miss.

| | | Self-Care Through Creativity: Let April Showers Nurture Your Inner Artist |
April is a month of transformation. Rainfall softens the earth, preparing it for the vibrant blooms of May. Just like nature, we, too, need time for renewal, reflection, and creative growth. This month, we invite you to embrace the idea that every storm—whether in weather or in life—can be a source of inspiration and renewal.
Finding Beauty in the Rain
Much like an artist layering colors on a canvas, April's showers lay the foundation for the beauty of spring. Creativity can be a similar process—sometimes messy, sometimes uncertain, but always full of potential. Instead of resisting the rain, let it be a reminder that growth happens even in the most unexpected moments.
Creative Ways to Embrace the Season
This month, use the theme of rain and renewal to inspire your art. Here are a few ways to bring April’s energy into your creative self-care:
- Rainy Day Reflections – Use watercolors or ink to create flowing, abstract pieces that capture the feeling of a soft drizzle or a sudden downpour. Let go of control and let the colors blend organically.
- From Showers to Flowers – Create a piece that represents growth—this could be a series of sketches showing transformation, a sculpture of budding plants, or even a poem about resilience.
- Puddle Jumping for the Soul – Give yourself permission to play! Try a new medium, mix textures, or experiment with movement in your art. Let go of perfection and simply enjoy the process.
A Season of Growth
Like the flowers that will bloom in May, creativity thrives when nurtured. Set aside time to create, reflect, and embrace the ever-changing nature of the season. The rain will pass, but the art you cultivate will continue to grow.
This April, let the showers wash away stress and doubt, making room for new ideas, fresh perspectives, and artistic renewal. After all, every masterpiece—like every flower—starts with a little rain.
