WKU Forensics Team wins NFA title
The WKU Forensics Team won the National Forensics Association National Tournament sweepstakes championship hosted by Bradley University April 13-17.

WKU sent 31 competitors with a total of 101 individual event (IE) entries and nine debate entries to the tournament. Of the 101 IE entries, WKU advanced 69 to the octofinal round, 46 entries advanced to the quarterfinal round, 29 entries advanced to the semifinal round, and 13 IE events advanced to the final round of the tournament.

Students in four events were awarded a national championship: Jonah Johnson and Rashon Leday in Duo Interpretation; Tani Washington in Informative Speaking and Rhetorical Criticism; and Cecilia Alali in Poetry Interpretation. 

WKU entered nine debaters in the tournament. Six of the entries advanced to the elimination rounds. Four advanced to the top 16. Senior Tanya Prabhakar and freshman Rae Fournier advanced to the round of 8. WKU earned four of the top 10 speaker awards with senior Andre Swai placing second, senior Tanya Prabhakar placing eighth, junior Hannah Jones placing ninth, and senior Miles Morton placing 10th.

Three WKU speakers were awarded with Pentathlon awards in recognition of the total points individuals earn across multiple events. Senior Caitlyn Woitena placed 15th, junior Tani Washington placed ninth, and sophomore Cecilia Alali placed seventh.

WKU was crowned the open sweepstakes champion for individual events out of 55 participating institutions. WKU placed third in LD Sweepstakes.

2022 WKU graduate awarded Fulbright US Student Grant
Kerby Gilstrap, a 2022 graduate in International Affairs and Arabic from Bowling Green, is WKU’s fourth Fulbright US Student Program grantee of the 2023-24 award year. Gilstrap has been awarded an English Teaching Assistantship for Algeria. 
Spotlight: PCAST Podcast
The Potter College of Arts & Letters has released its new podcast, PCAST: Empowered by PCAL. The podcast will focus on topics related to each department within the academic college and how the arts, humanities, media, and social sciences can enact change in the world.
WKU students place 2nd, 4th in Hearst multimedia competition
Two WKU photojournalism students placed in the top five of the third multimedia competition of the 2022-2023 Hearst Journalism Awards Program. Brenna Pepke, a 2022 graduate from Memphis, Tennessee, finished second in the Multimedia Digital News/Enterprise Competition; Allie Schallert, a senior from New Windsor, New York, finished fourth. WKU is in first place in the Intercollegiate Multimedia Competition with the highest accumulated student points from three of four multimedia competitions.
WKU Alumni, Art & Design hosting artist reception Friday
The WKU Department of Art & Design and the WKU Alumni Association will host a reception for artist Kim Jones at 5 p.m. Friday in the Calvin M. and Rosella S. Isbell Atrium of the Eva and Jim Martens Alumni Center. Jones’ artwork is on display in the FirstBank Exhibit Gallery through May.
Graphic Design Scholarships and Awards announced
The WKU Department of Art & Design announced this year’s student winners of the Gerald Printing Graphic Design Scholarships and Awards. These scholarships were created and first awarded in 2022 through the generous support of Gerald Printing.
WKU hosting discussion with photographer Bell Soto
WKU Department of Applied Human Sciences will host Shifting Perspective: A Discussion with Photographer Bell Soto at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Jody Richards Hall Auditorium. Seth Howard, Interior Design and Fashion Merchandising instructor, will lead a moderated discussion with Bell Soto, a New York-based photographer/director. His print and video work has been published in international publications like Vogue Italia, Vogue Germany, Vogue Japan, Vmagazine, Vman, L’Officiel Hommes and Vanity Fair.
Cultural Enhancement Series to feature Paul Brock Band
The WKU Cultural Enhancement Series will welcome the Paul Brock Band to campus on Wednesday (April 26) for a night of Irish folk music as part of the "Kentucky Unexpected" series. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center Recital Hall (Room 189). Admission is free; no tickets are necessary, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Author Erin Slaughter returns to WKU for presentation
The English Department’s Creative Writing Reading Series hosted Erin Slaughter on April 13. She was in the first MFA cohort at WKU before going on to get her PhD at Florida State. Her time in the MFA program at WKU is what inspired many of the short stories from her latest book, A Manual for How to Love Us.
Students in Spanish class talk with social media influencer
Students in Dr. Inma Pertusa’s SPAN 331: Spanish for Professional Communication course participated in a presentation on April 14 by Llanos Blanco, Curly Girl, a Spanish influencer with a presence on YouTube, Instagram, and Tik Tok. The students learned about her process of turning a hobby in to a profession that encompasses social media and beyond, including organizing large public events with presentations in various locations in Spain.
