March is National Brain Injury Awareness Month, a time to focus on preventing brain injuries and promoting brain health. There are two main types of brain injuries: Traumatic & Non-Traumatic. Traumatic injuries occur from things like falls, accidents, recreation, or violence; while Non-Traumatic injuries occur from things like strokes, disease, or lack of oxygen. For those working in our industry, it's crucial to protect your head on the job and take steps to maintain brain health throughout your life. Here are some simple tips and adjustments that can make a significant difference for you and your employees:
-
Install Tool Lanyards: Dropped tools can cause serious head injuries. Using tool lanyards can prevent tools from falling and hitting another
-
Use Clear Signage: Clear and visible signs should indicate hazards, exits, and areas not to enter. This helps everyone on the site avoid potential dangers
-
Regular Safety Audits: Conducting periodic safety checks can help prevent potential accidents. This proactive approach takes a little time and saves a lot of heartache
-
Proper Lighting: Ensure your work area is well-lit. Good lighting reduces the risk of accidents and helps you see potential hazards more clearly
-
Use Anti-Fatigue Mats: Standing for long periods can lead to fatigue and increase the risk of accidents or falls. Anti-fatigue mats can reduce discomfort and provide better support
-
Strengthen Your Toes: Weak toe strength is a significant predictor of falls in individuals. Particularly for older people, practice some toe strength exercises with your team
We hope that you are able to benefit from some of these practical tips and prevent brain injuries at the workplace. You’ve only got one head, use it!
