Happenings at Mary Magdalene Church

Mary Magdalene Reads …

“The Healing Path – A Memoir and an Invitation,” by James Finley

Our Tuesday book group will resume on April 22nd. We will be reading “The Healing Path – A Memoir and an Invitation,” by James Finley. Jim gracefully shares stories of healing from trauma, both his own and from his lifetime as a psychotherapist specializing in trauma. As Jim shares details of his own traumas (emotional, physical and sexual), he shares his self-discovery, healing, and his personal spiritual journey. Jim invites us, in this contemplative reflection, to be inspired to heal, and to find our own path to God’s love.

Jim Bridges’ review: Five stars! Is it sometimes difficult? Yes. Will you cry? I did, many times - touched by the amazing power of God to transform our pains into love. I am so grateful for Jim’s courageous, heartfelt, intimate sharing of his path and inviting us to find our own.

We will meet in the MMC library and on Zoom at 6:30 pm EST. Here is the link for all Zoom sessions:  https://us06web.zoom.us/j/82790568373?pwd=QhatbwzpIVUJDynwoWTyASxDASC7hb.1

Saving Jesus from the Church - Final Discussion!

Our community-wide reading of “Saving Jesus from the Church: How to Stop Worshipping Christ and Start Following Jesus” by Robin Meyers will conclude on Monday, April 14th from 7-8PM. We will discuss the final two chapters on Zoom. Participation in the Zoom discussion is optional, but if you are interested in attending, follow this link

Small Change to Make BIG Changes!

The Children's Ministry will be collecting small, loose, change. Our goal is to fill our empty soup pot by the end of Lent and then donate the money to World Relief. Empty soup bowls will be at each entrance to our church and downstairs in Fellowship Hall. We ask you to please consider filling our bowls with your loose pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters to lighten your pockets and purses and help those in need!

Blessing Box

Our community, in conjunction with the Pittsford Food Cupboard will be offering a Blessing Box to help combat food insecurity and provide basic necessities to those facing challenging circumstances in our area. Donations will be subsidized by the Food Cupboard, but you can also contribute food and hygiene items as well. For a list of suggested items, click here. Please place all canned goods on the bottom shelf and any perisables on the top shelves. Thank you for your generosity to those in need!

~Deacon-in-Formation Corner~

A Note from Betty Jerabeck

Hi there from Betty Jerabeck!

As I mentioned in the February piece, the understanding of the diaconate has evolved over time. You may be most familiar with the deacon assisting at the altar, preaching a homily, or serving within the immediate community in various ways. But the role of a deacon extends beyond these familiar images.

Recently, a community member asked me about something I wrote:

"Over time, the role of the deacon has evolved to include serving as a prophetic voice in the community, actively bridging the gap between the Church and the wider world." They wanted to know, “What do you mean by prophetic voice?” Great question!

What Is a Prophetic Voice?

A prophetic voice is the call to speak and act courageously for God’s justice, truth, and compassion—both within the Church and in the world. It means advocating for the marginalized, addressing social injustices, and embodying Jesus’ mission of love and service.

Why "Prophetic"?

Throughout Scripture, prophets—like Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Amos—were God’s messengers, calling people to repentance and justice. Deacons, as ordained ministers of service, carry forward this tradition by bringing the concerns of the poor, the oppressed, and the voiceless into the life of the Church and urging action.

Yes, deacons serve in liturgical roles, but their ministry also extends beyond charity to advocacy, working to address systemic injustices and call for transformation in society (Acts 6:1-6).

The Deacon as a Bridge

A prophetic deacon does not remain silent in the face of oppression or suffering but challenges unjust systems with the Gospel message. This may mean:

  • Engaging in social justice movements
  • Speaking out on ethical and moral issues
  • Calling the Church to live out Christ’s love and justice in the world

Deacons are often described as a bridge between the Church and the world, bringing real-world struggles into the Church’s awareness while bringing Christ’s presence into those struggles.

A Call for All of Us

The prophetic voice of a deacon is not just about the ordained—it’s a call for all of us. At the end of every Mass, we are sent forth to love and serve our God and each other. The prophetic deacon reminds us of this mission, encouraging us to live out our faith boldly, to stand for justice, and to bring Christ’s love into the world.

How is God calling each one of us to be a prophetic voice today?

What do you want from your deacon?

Please feel free to email me!

With love as we walk in Jesus’ footsteps,

Betty

CALM Ministry

CALM Ministry is a ministry of listening. We believe the gift of listening helps to alleviate suffering and that the gift of presence is one of the greatest gifts we can offer another. If you are hurting or lonely, we have trained soul-listeners who offer time and space to truly listen in a confidential and non-judgmental manner. CALM Ministers are not counselors and do not offer advice. They do, however, offer a warm heart and a soft landing place. For more information, please see our brochure, or email Lori Cunliff at calm.ministry.mm@gmail.com
