Dear Friends-

This Sunday, the third Sunday of Easter, we hear a story of another ‘post-resurrection’ appearance of Jesus. This time, on the afternoon of Easter, two disciples are walking on the road to Emmaus when they are joined by a mysterious stranger. After walking with him, learning from him and breaking bread with him, they realize it is Jesus himself-risen from the dead.

In this story, we are, like those disciples, invited to walk with Jesus.

This prayer from Lancelot Andrewes (the translator of the King James Bible) encapsulates the active, engaging, practical way that we are expcted to walk with the risen Christ:

“Lord Jesus, I give you my hands to do your work. I give you my feet to go your way. I give you my eyes to see as you do. I give you my tongue to speak your words. I give you my mind that you may think in me. I give you my spirit that you may pray in me. Above all, I give you my heart that you may love in me…I give you my whole self that you may grow in me, so that it is you, Lord Jesus, who live and work and pray in me. Amen.”

OUTREACH OPPORTUNITIES

Please Consider Donating

Menstrual Products and Diapers

To Help Those In Need!

St. Peter’s now has two permanent collection bins located by the back door to benefit Dignity Matters and the Diaper Depot in Waltham. Here is a short description of both organizations.

Dignity Matters:

Dignity Matters is a non-profit organization that collects, purchases, and supplies menstrual products, bras, and underwear to women and girls who are homeless or disadvantaged to help them stay healthy, regain self-confidence, and live with basic dignity. You can’t purchase menstrual care with SNAP/Food Stamps or WIC (the most significant sources of support for women and families in need), and there are no federal or state programs that help women in Massachusetts buy these products. These monthly items are expensive and have risen in price 25% since 2022. Last year, Dignity Matters distributed almost 3,000,000 items helping 15,000 women/girls each month with menstrual care, bras, and underwear. Dignity Matters serves over 170 Massachusetts shelters, food pantries, clinics, public schools, and community colleges.

There is greatest need for tampons so please consider buying those instead of pads.

Diaper Depot:

Christ Church Waltham created Diaper Depot in 2007 to provide low-income families with diaper supplies. Diaper Depot provides diapers and feminine hygiene supplies to Waltham residents that qualify for financial assistance (WIC or Mass Health) monthly. This has become an especially important outreach mission as the need for disposable diapers is ongoing and critical. One in three mothers struggle to buy diapers for their babies, and unfortunately diapers cannot be purchased with WIC assistance and other assistance programs like SNAP. Most day care providers require that children arrive with their own supply of disposable diapers causing an additional burden to working mothers. Babies born into low-income families may spend an entire day or more in one diaper, leading to serious health risks. At the Diaper Depot, we are currently servicing over 100 Waltham children, distributing over 4,000 diapers a month. Generous donations help to alleviate the burden of diaper need for many families in Waltham.

The greatest need is for diaper size 5, 6, & 7

(60% of diapers distributed are sizes 5 & 6).

Afghan Ministry Update

It has been a busy few weeks for our Manchester families. We celebrated the Persian New Year with a Nowruz celebration at Grace Episcopal Church in Manchester back on March 19th. Ramadan began on the next Tuesday and continues through next week. The Ramadan fast is not easy and as the days grow longer, iftar comes later. It is also borderline unhealthy as woman who are pregnant are fasting, some who are having significant dental issues will not take any pain medication and others on routine medications will not take them. Hansi and I were invited to a very informative presentation at the Islamic Center of Boston about Muslims in America and Ramadan observances. We observed prayer and worship and then enjoyed a delicious iftar beginning with the most delicious dates we’ve ever had. It was a special evening. Our recent Tuesday enrichment topics have focused on nutrition, dental hygiene and children car safety. We had a very informative car seat clinic and the Mom’s and volunteers learned how to install seats properly. Officer Rachel was quite impressive and a hit with the Mom’s and the kids. Hansi is hard at work getting the kids signed up and outfitted for soccer which begins next week. We are also trying to get the kids into academic and recreational summer programs. The thought of these kids cooped up in apartments in unsafe neighborhoods is pretty discouraging. We are also realizing how behind most of these children are academically. Eid is fast approaching and there is a celebration being planned for the “single” men. Many are actually not single. They have wives and children stuck in Afghanistan. We are praying for their reunification. These men often work double shifts, share apartments with up to 4 or 5 others in an effort to send home as much money as they can to support their families. Having the opportunity for them to take a day off and get to know each other better as they also build community is very important. Sewing Seeds sales are brisk! We have 8 sales events planned over the next three weeks! As always, we are grateful for everyone’s support.

Thank you,

Karen & Hansi

Home Communion and Prayer

church set up.jpg

Though many of St. Peter's parishioners have returned to worshiping and receiving Holy Communion in person inside our church building, we know it is not yet safe for all of us to do so. We will continue to live-stream our services so that we may include as many as possible in our offerings of praise and thanksgiving to God.

If it is not yet safe for you to worship with us in person, and you would like to receive Holy Communion and/or a share a time of prayer at your home, please contact the Parish Office.

If you would like to schedule a time during the week for private prayer in the church, please contact the church office.

St. Peter's is committed to continuing to make our worship space safe and welcoming to all. We hope to have you back with us in person as soon as doing so is the right choice for you.
