The Port of Brownsville is rising up the ranks nationwide for the movement of waterborne cargo as tonnage increased 30 percent from 2020 to 2021. Increased volumes of commodities such as steel, wind energy components, and liquid bulk products continue to move through the port.

Rising to the Top:

Port of Brownsville Among Leading Maritime Ports for Waterborne Cargo

Consistently setting new records, the Port of Brownsville continues to gain national prominence among the leading maritime ports in the United States.


According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ most recent annual report ranking 150 maritime ports nationwide, the Port of Brownsville rose to 55th position in the country for the movement of waterborne cargo in 2021, a significant leap from 66th place in 2020.


Throughout 2021, 8.9 million tons of cargo were transported via the port’s waterways, representing a 30% increase from 2020’s 6.7 million tons. During that same period, traffic at the port recorded robust vessel activity with 1,854 vessel calls in 2021, signaling a 10.9% increase from the previous year’s total of 1,671.


“The Port of Brownsville has arrived, and we’ve been here for a while. We’re starting to see the incremental impact that continued growth has had in the region, our community, and the whole state of Texas,” said Port Director and CEO Eduardo A. Campirano.

Recipients of the 2023 Port of Brownsville Scholarship and their families were celebrated during a lunch and tour of the port on May 20.

Port Honors High School Graduates with $1,000 Scholarships

The Brownsville Navigation District (BND) proudly announces the recipients of the 2023 Port of Brownsville Scholarship. This program is in support and encouragement to the pursuit of higher education for students within the district.


Thirty-two local high school graduating seniors will receive $1,000 scholarships upon enrollment in a college, university, or technical school. The scholarship winners – selected for their academic performance, community involvement, extracurricular activities, and work experience, as well as for essays penned as part of their applications – attend 16 public and private high schools in the Brownsville and Los Fresnos area.


"On behalf of the Brownsville Navigation District, we congratulate these students on their commitment to continue their education and learning the skills they need to thrive in the workforce," said BND Chairman Esteban Guerra. "The Port of Brownsville is proud to champion our next generation of leaders as they prepare for a bright future."

Throughout the month of May, the Port of Brownsville welcomed members of the community to learn more about advancements at the port.


Port Director and CEO Eduardo A. Campirano greeted the attendees of Leadership Brownsville Class 38 to discuss the port's various industries, its upcoming projects, and its impact on the Rio Grande Valley region.


The Port of Brownsville hosted a stakeholder meeting regarding the merger between Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern. CPKC becomes the first and only single-line railway connecting Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. David Eaton, CPKC's Director of Business Development Mexico, briefed the attendees of the meeting on the recent merger and the future business opportunities for the Rio Grande Valley.

2023 Hurricane Season Begins

The Port of Brownsville has made preparations for the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season, which began June 1 and ends Nov. 30. 

  

In preparation, port staff participated in seasonal alert meetings and reviewed and updated its hurricane preparedness plan.

 

During this time, the Port of Brownsville operates under the U.S. Coast Guard’s Port Hurricane Condition IV, with all emergency equipment inspected and personnel prepared for severe weather events.



The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has predicted the 2023 Atlantic hurricane season will be "near-normal" forecasting 12 to 17 named storms, of which 5 to 9 could become hurricanes , including 1 to 4 major hurricanes. NOAA provides these ranges with a 70 percent confidence.
