As we prepare for the upcoming solar eclipse on April 8, we want to ensure the safety and well-being of our students. Considering this event, we will be taking precautionary measures to protect our students' vision and safety. This will be accomplished by keeping students indoors during the eclipse period with all classes, recess and PE classes taking place indoors. Schedule changes will keep both parents and bus drivers off the road during the critical eclipse period.
On Monday, April 8, 2024, the day of the solar eclipse, there will be a livestream of the event available for all students to watch. To ensure the safety of all of students, all K-8 students will be dismissed at 3:30 p.m. with K-2 having a delayed dismissal. The 3:30 p.m. dismissal will avoid the eclipse window. The partial eclipse will begin at 12:51 p.m., near totality at 1:33 p.m., and reach maximum totality at 2:07 p.m., with finality of the partial eclipse completed at 3:21 p.m.
Experts have advised that the danger to vision extends throughout the eclipse period. Therefore, parents who wish to experience the eclipse with their child at home are advised to pick them up by 12:30 p.m. to avoid driving during the eclipse window. We urge everyone to follow the recommended safety precautions found in the link: Eclipse Viewing Safety (nasa.gov).
In preparation for these schedule changes, state testing will be completed by 10:45 a.m. that morning.
This week, students will also be learning about the eclipse from Mrs. Parkerson and her student eclipse ambassadors, Brody Ladd, and Lillian Hannon, will present eclipse lessons to the K-5 students. Mrs. Parkerson will also be reviewing this information with students in grades 6-7-8 this week.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we prioritize the safety of our students during this unique celestial event. Please feel free to reach out to administration with questions.
