DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.

4-Week Anti-Racism Challenge (ARC)

Welcome to WEEK 1: July 1 - 7, 2023

This is your own personal journey. To participate, we ask that you complete at least 3 activities this week. You can use the ARC Tracking tool below to monitor your progress. Choose from the following:

LISTEN: To this excellent 29-min podcast. Acclaimed anti-racist educator and author Tim Wise explores how American political leaders have been tapping into white anxiety, stoking white grievance, and scapegoating people of color for decades to divide and conquer working class voters.

READ/LEARN: In March 2023, the U. S. Department of Justice completed its investigation of Louisville Metro Police Department and issued a scathing report of the Department’s pattern and practices of abuse, especially toward Louisville’s Black residents. The report is well-written, and the information is important to know—but at 90 pages, it’s a bit of a read. We have broken the report into 4 sections (one for each week of the ARC). Read Section 1. https://drive.google.com/file/d/13898jaQGrwN3gdzYY3UU71lIu9Aky9qJ/view?usp=sharing

LISTEN: In 1967, white author William Styron published the Pulitzer Prize winning The Confessions of Nat Turner. Styron wrote the novel through the point of view of Turner, a Black enslaved man, who led a rebellion of enslaved Virginians. His interpretation was very controversial among many Blacks. When the book was being considered for a film, James Baldwin hosted a dialogue on his radio show “James Baldwin Speaks!” with Styron and Black actor, Ossie Davis. Davis offers powerful insights.
