Shawna Rohrman Named Invest in Children Director
Shawna Rohrman, PhD, has been named permanent Director of the Cuyahoga County Office of Early Childhood/Invest in Children, after serving as Interim Director for the past year. Shawna will oversee the Office of Early Childhood, and Invest in Children, the public/private partnership that leads Cuyahoga County's early childhood service continuum from prenatal to kindergarten.

Shawna is a sociologist by training and brings this lens to Invest in Children's work to better understand how our social systems shape children’s early experiences and environments, and how we can improve these systems to ensure all children have opportunities to thrive.

Shawna came to Invest in Children in 2017, serving first as Evaluation Manager and then Associate Director, prior to be named Interim Director. In each of these roles she has worked collaboratively with OEC/IIC’s lead agencies, community partners, and other County offices to help ensure a strong continuum of services for young children. Shawna graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.A. in Sociology and Criminal Justice from Baldwin-Wallace University, received a M.A. in Sociology from the University of Akron, and has a Ph.D. in Sociology from Indiana University.

FamilySpace Earns National Association of Counties
2023 Achievement Award
The National Association of Counties has awarded FamilySpace a 2023 Achievement Award. The award recognizes not only the work of the program, but of the close cooperation of five agencies that partnered to make it a reality.

FamilySpace is a weekly time and space in select local libraries where families with young children can come together to connect with other families going through similar experiences to play, learn, and grow together. A trained staff person also assists with connecting families to resources and services.
Each FamilySpace location consists of the following features to support families:

  • Family-friendly spaces, materials and activities.

  • Referrals to services and resources such as: Home Visiting, Job Training, Early Childhood Mental Health Services and more.

  • Family input is a key part of how the FamilySpace locations operate. Neighborhood-based Family Advisory Committees guide the programming to meet family interests and needs and to achieve equity through shared decision making.
