Dear CSA,

Fieldwork is so busy on the farm this time of year that we don't seem to have a lot of energy for leisurely activities. But every so often we like to take a break and bond as a team, which is why the grand celebration of "New Ear's Eve" was created. Once a year (generally the week of our first corn harvest) we gather under our mighty Lunch Oak Tree and exchange corn-themed gifts and puns in celebration of reaching a seasonal milestone on the farm.

This year's New "Ear's" Eve gala was jam-packed with an amazing variety of creative and artistic talent, accompanied by CSBs (Community Supported Burritos) from our Crew Burrito Fund. Who knew that our amazing group of Mountain Bounty Farmers were also talented chefs, illustrators, embroiders, and sculptors?

Many would agree that the highlight of the day was an acapella, corn-themed 90's

R&B ballad by our Tractor and Irrigation Specialist Sean, and his corncob pipe!

While the spirit of New "Ear's" Eve is light and fun, it is also a good reminder to pause for a moment and celebrate the hard work and dedication it has taken all of us to successfully arrive at this point in the summer season. Our crew is A-Maize-ing!

Enjoy your shares this week!

P.S. - A Quick note about organic corn!

Corn faces a mighty foe in the corn earworm. This earworm has a special fondness for laying eggs on corn silks and feeding on both the silks and the kernels. Conventional crop producers rely on an array of toxic chemical sprays and genetically engineered corn varieties designed to poison corn earworms. In organic farming, the tools to control earworm damage are limited. Despite our best efforts to control this pest, you may encounter earworm damage on occasion. As one of our Farmer's Market shoppers has remarked, “if the corn doesn’t have earworms, then it probably isn’t organic.”

While we would love to always provide you with gorgeous organic corn such as this...

Fairly often you might receive an ear with a damaged tip.

We leave the corn fully intact for storage success and encourage our CSA members to cut off the tip before consuming. (Hot tip - my chickens love to hunt out the worm in the cut-off cob nub.)

Thank you for support organic agriculture!

Seasonal Flower Shares -

Provided by Little Boy Flowers

There will be no Summer Flower Share offered this season.

Recipes, storage tips, inspiration and nutrition information:

  • Grilled Mexican Street Corn / Elotes (Click here) are such a treat! They are a great accompaniment to grilled meats, but also could really be a meal to themselves. A great way to use your MBF Corn and you can easily sub this week's Basil for cilantro.
  • Recently someone remarked that they didn't think they liked Eggplant because they didn't like Baba ganoush (which is loved by others, so click Here for that recipe...). Then they ate barbeque Eggplant, changing their aubergine outlook for the better. This Barbecued Eggplant recipe (Click here) is so simple and delicious, only 3 ingredients!

  • For those that like their slaw with no mayo, this Best Vinegar Coleslaw recipe (Click here) is a yummy way to use this week's Cabbage. I also like to shred a Carrot or two into my coleslaw to add color and sweetness.

  • If you're trying to entertain kids (and adults) at home for the summer break, why not use your Cucumbers and have a tea party with some Cucumber Sandwiches (Click here)?
