SAFETY FIRST

NOW YOU KNOW

The many groups that use the Killiney Beach Community Hall have asked for more storage and the NWCA has answered. On May 31 a storage unit, purchased by the NWCA and coordinated by NWCA President Josh Galloway, was placed between the hall and the library. This unit will serve to store tables, chairs, and other various user group items that are taking up space in our Community Hall. Plans to "pretty" it up are in the making and part of NWCA boards discussions and actions.

Hall Makeover with NWCA Director Brandy

Did you know the hammers have been swinging and the rollers painting at Killiney Beach Community Hall?

After months of planning, meetings, and discussions NWCA Rental Director Brandy has been leading the charge and giving our community hall the sprucing up it needed.

We invite you to come down to the hall and enjoy one of our activities and check out the progress!

Shout out to NWCA Sports Director Clayton Kam, owner of Killiney Beach Builders, for the ideas, planning, and the building of the new add on. The mezzanine has been filled in and closet reconfigured for additional storage. The closet has also been closed off with a door for added function, beauty, and safety for all hall users of all ages to enjoy.

PREVIOUS EVENTS - MAY 2023

Helping Parkers Cove

In the beginning of May our neighbouring community of Parkers Cove were struggling with the melting ice pack and rising flooding waters. The Parker Cove community, which has a large senior base, had been working around the clock doing the backbreaking manual work of loading sandbags to protect their homes. We, neighbouring community members of the NWCA, understand their need and call to action. NWCA board members aided tirelessly with sandbagging efforts. In total, as reported by the OKIB, OKIB has delivered 285 dump truck loads of sand to the Whiteman’s creek sandbagging station since Monday, May 1st. That is ALOT of sandbags and in efforts to keep homeowners and volunteers fueled and focused on bagging, the NWCA contributed dinner on the evening of May 4. With a large collaboration of heart, muscles, and machine many homes were saved this spring melt of 2023.

Over the last few years our community has been tested and results show that we are resilient and come back stronger and united. This is what makes the Westside the Bestside and why we are so proud to call it home.

TIME TO GO TO THE BEACH

Thank you to Regional District of Central Okanagan Parks staff for repairing the Killiney Beach boat bumper and dock ladder. RDCO Parks staff will also be replacing 3 damaged picnic table seats shortly. A shout out to North Westside Fire Rescue who will have the fire boat out this weekend for practice and will blast the 2 goose poop covered swim floats. And, thank you to Chris Bradley from Su Casa Sustainable Landscaping Ltd for confirming that weed whacking will be done this week. Lastly, thank you to Catherine Middleton’s daughter and her friend for scraping the swim floats with paddles and cleaning them as best as they could. HAVE A PERFECT DAY 🌻 Michelle

Shared by Killiney resident, Michelle Carson, to the People of the North Westside Facebook Group.

A big Thank you to everyone who came to the park for Music in the Park on Saturday, May 20th. "Summer Blooms" Country Music was a great way to start the season. Supporting live music is the only way to make it happen...we do it for YOU so Thank you for your support.

Thank you to our sponsors for the May 20th Music In the Park ...our keynote Sponsor for the Musicians, Anthony Morgan at Full Throttle Trees Services, the BBQ Sponsor, Butcher Boys and the serving table Sponsor COBS Bread....It is through the support of our locals that keep live music alive.

I hope that you all enjoyed the music. Duane came in with his 'Country' friends and John, Wayne and Duane got the train out of the station with a happy blast of country classics. ...and the harmonica was a pleasant surprise. What can you say about Cat Wells...what a professional she is, playing as the small 'hurricane' winds came and tried to take out the tents...with the great people of the westside jumping in (as they always do) and holding onto the tent poles to save the event. I will not apologize for taking this opportunity to do a little 'pole' dance while Cat was playing...sometime when you are given lemons, you make lemonade! She surely brought the fun on Saturday. The show closed with Marv Machura and it is clear why he is called a true Canadian musician...his tribute to Gordon Lightfoot was epic. Thank you to all the musicians for performing and entertaining us.

The Hippie Marketers arrived early, on time and late...but they arrived and we were so blessed to have them come and share their treats and crafts and art and flowers. Thank you for hanging in for the duration of the event, even when the crowd was spooked by the weather.

You all are the fabric of our community and it was so nice to see familiar faces and some new Hippie Market 'friends'. Welcome to the family. There is room for more vendors so please feel free to participate in any of the upcoming markets. We love to support local!

On a personal note, a big thank you to our NWCA Board who are so supportive of live music. Behind the scenes, Jaimie Dewar has worked tirelessly to create the posters and signage package to make sure that the event is well publicized. Hours of hard work from Jaimie, makes the events that much more appealing to everyone. Fawn Myndzak and Jason McColl set up the event and took her down, which is so much appreciated...'many hands make light work' my grandma used to say and it is so true. Paige Taylor who helped guide Hippie Market vendors to their spots and walked with the 50/50 bucket, helping make live music more feasible. Scott Graham and Josh Galloway who worked the front entrance and greeted everyone , thank you for your time and efforts. Andrea Kveton, who always shows up and knows exactly where she is needed and helped out at the barbecue and keeping everything moving and functioning smoothly, thank you Andrea. What a great team effort.

And as always, i must thank my partner Greg MacKeen. His BBQ skills were put to the test with the wind blowing out the flames and the BBQ giving him hiccups with overheating...but the ribs came off the Bar-Be and many were very pleased with their meal. Thank you to my best friend.

Well there is no rest for the weary as they say as we gear up for our next fantastic event...MUSIC IN THE PARK presents ART in The Park...A Celebration of Colour and Soul on June 10 from noon-3PM...it will be a 'very different' event with lots of 'experiential' opportunities. Artists of all ages will be demonstrating their love of art and the creative way their souls are portrayed. The musicians package includes professionals in flute and classical guitar, violin and keyboard and Michael Averill will be present with his poetic and philosophical songwriting, guitar playing style. Something very extraordinary is planned for your eyes (ART) and ears (MUSIC).

We sure hope that you enjoyed your Saturday with us and hope you will support Music In the Park on June 10. We need your support to continue to put on these fun days on the westside. Please come and check out each event as they happen. You won't be disappointed. See you at the Park,

Wendy Waters, NWCA Events Director 🌻

NWFR - North Westside Fire Rescue News and Updates

Articles shared are posted on NWFR Facebook pages. Click the link to follow:

North Westside Fire Rescue | Vernon BC | Facebook

North Westside Fire Rescue is proud of our Junior Firefighter Ruby Kaltiainen. Not only did Ruby graduate from the Vernon Youth Police Academy this last weekend she was also a major award winner. Out of 33 students she was one of 4 to be awarded for her efforts. Ruby won the esprit de corps award presented by Vernon RCMP Supt. Shawna Baher. Congratulations Ruby!

The North Westside Junior Firefighter Program gives young people between the ages of 16 – 18 the chance to learn about local Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Medical Services in a safe, controlled, educational, and fun way with the hopes that they will stay on as a full Firefighter with NWFR once they are old enough. The program has proven to be very successful, just recently Nic Cantryn went on to be a Professional Firefighter with Burnaby Fire Department Graduating top of his firefighter recruit class. Nic served with North Westside Fire Rescue for 8 years, starting his Firefighting Career path at 16 as an NWFR Junior Firefighter.

May 15 - Fire Rating Change

The fire rating has increased from MODERATE to HIGH today. Please be careful & enjoy responsibly.

What does high mean?

High: Forest fuels are very dry and the fire risk is serious. New fires may start easily, burn vigorously, and challenge fire suppression efforts. Extreme caution must be used in any forest activities. Open burning and industrial activities may be restricted.

RDCO Burning Bylaws

Congratulations Nic Hefford for being awarded firefighter of the month. Even after becoming a new dad, Nic has put in countless hours of training. Nic has of practice attendance and 90% call attendance.

Nic’s also working with our training department to share his knowledge with the rest of our members. Great work, Nic!

May 3 Training (above)

Last night NWFR members were busy training on auto extrication (auto ex). This is part 1 of a 3 part training series, critical for our westside community.

May 18 Training

NWFR members were at Fintry Park this week practicing forestry skills & training on various deployment methods on our engine, tender and rescue vehicles, getting prepared for wildfire season. We also had two of our amazing Jr. Firefighters Ruby & Bogdan demonstrate the “melon roll” hose method.

It was Emergency Preparedness Week during a week in the May and www.cordemergency.ca is the source for emergency information in the #CentralOkanagan.

Post-wildfire areas have a higher risk of floods and landslides. Get to know where normal drainage channels are around your home or property.

MAY 14 - HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY

We would like to thank everyone for their generosity & support today at the Fintry Mother’s Day Fair. It was great to see all your smiling faces and to meet so many wonderful people that make this community great.

MAY 20 - LA CASA FUNDRAISER

JUNE 2023 MOON CALENDAR

The Full Strawberry Moon

Article link:

Full Moon June 2023, The Full Strawberry Moon - FullMoonology

When is the full moon in June 2023?

Mark your calendars for the next June 2023 Full Moon. The next June full moon is Saturday June 3, 2023 11:42 PM EDT or June 4, 2023 3:42 AM UTC based on the data provided by NASA. It will be the seventh 2023 full moon on the calendar during the year.

A full moon occurs when the Earth is directly between the Sun and Moon so that the moon looks completely illuminated when you look at it. It happens about once a month or, 29.53 days on average.

What is the name of the June 2023 Full Moon?

One name for the June 2023 Full Moon is the Full Strawberry Moon. It’s a name you could have guessed if you like to pick strawberries in June. The Full Strawberry Moon fits nicely as summer approaches, and it’s time to enjoy this fruit.

Other nicknames for the June Full Moon include: Rose Moon, Mead Moon, and Honey Moon.

Which season includes the June Full Moon?

In 2023, the June Full Moon will be the last full moon of the Spring 2023 season.

It will occur before the Summer Solstice in 2023. The Summer Solstice marks the beginning of astronomical summer and the end of astronomical spring in the Northern Hemisphere.

In 2023, the Summer Solstice will be Wednesday, June 21, 2023 10:58 AM EDT or 2:58 PM UTC.

Depending on the year, the Full Strawberry Moon could occur either as the last Spring Fully Moon or the first Full Moon of Summer, depending on if it happens before or after the Summer Solstice.

June 2023 Moon Phases in Eastern Time and UTC

Below are the lunar phases for June 2023 including the new moon, first quarter, full moon, and last quarter that are on the schedule for each month.
