2023 Legislative Wrap-Up
By Michael Santo, COSHRM Legislative Director and Managing Attorney at Bechtel & Santo

Yes, folks, we’ve arrived. On May 8, 2023, the Colorado legislature wrapped up the 2023 Legislative Session in Colorado. Since then, Governor Polis has been busy reviewing and, for the most part, signing all the employment bills that made their way to the Governor’s desk. The links below provide summaries of the employment/HR bills that will soon become effective.

So, now that we’ve arrived, these are the next steps that every Colorado employer should undertake.

  1. Review your anti-harassment policies and procedures with your legal counsel to ensure compliance with POWR. Further, it is essential that all Colorado employers train employees in these policies and procedures and that organizations develop an internal system for tracking all complaints of discriminatory or unfair employment practices.
  2. Review your settlement/severance agreement with your legal representative to ensure compliance with POWR. POWR includes the potential for an automatic fine of $5,000 for noncompliance.
  3. Review and revise your Sick Leave policy to ensure that it identifies the new reasons for paid leave under HFWA.
  4. Review and, if necessary, revise your application process and develop a posting system to identify new hires.
SHRM23 is in the books!
SHRM23, SHRM's Annual Conference & Expo, was in Las Vegas this week. Colorado was well-represented with hundreds of attendees from the Centennial State, including many COSHRM and local chapter volunteers. COSHRM co-hosted a Four Corners States Networking Reception with
Arizona SHRM, SHRM New Mexico and Utah SHRM State Councils.
Thank you to everyone that joined us for that event.

We'll see you next year at SHRM24 in Chicago!
