America's Newspapers and News/Media Alliance applaud California State Assembly for passing California Journalism Preservation Act
|
The California Journalism Preservation Act (CJPA, AB 886) passed out of the California State Assembly yesterday in a floor vote of 46-6. The bill, which was introduced by Assemblymember Buffy Wicks (D-Oakland) in March, would require Big Tech platforms such as Facebook and Google to pay news publishers a “journalism usage fee” to use the content of eligible digital journalism providers, as defined in the bill.
Dean Ridings, CEO of America's Newspapers, said: "We applaud the efforts of Assemblymember Buffy Wicks and the California State Assembly in passing the California Journalism Preservation Act. This bill will begin to address the inequity of Big Tech’s use of local newspapers' content without compensation. Assemblymember Wicks got it right when she said that 'a free press is in our constitution, and it is at risk right now. That is what this bill is about.' The California Journalism Preservation Act is an important step forward in leveling the playing field for local newspapers."
