DIRECTOR'S NOTE

An AMSE Foundation membership brings with it so many perks.  In addition to free admission to our museums, discounts on store purchases, events, and facility rentals, and early notice of programs, you also get free admission to other museums across the country who are taking part in the ASTC (Association of Science and Technology Centers) passport program.  That means, for example, if your travels take you to the Museum of Science and History in Memphis, the Discovery Center at Murfree Spring in Murfreesboro, the Hands On! Discovery Center in Gray, the Hands-On Science Center in Tullahoma, or the Discovery Park of America in Union City, you get in for free!  Or, if your travels take you out of the Volunteer State, you get free admission to other great institutions like the Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas, the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York, the Field

Museum in Chicago, and the

AMSE and K-25 History Center Director:

Alan Lowe

California Science Center in Los Angeles.  Also, your membership is vital to our continued success.  We depend on that support to provide the exhibits and programming central to our important mission.  You can find more information on how to purchase memberships, and the terrific perks that come with them, at amse.org.

EVENTS

Sally’s Night

Looking to the Stars with AMSE

June 17 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, lived her life with extraordinary energy, passion, curiosity and joy. All astronauts lead exciting lives, but some are larger than life even before they reach for the stars. Whether in the classroom or on the tennis court, in the lab or on the launch pad—it was clear from the start that Dr. Ride would reach great heights.

Each June we mark the anniversary of one exciting episode of Sally’s extraordinary life—the first night she looked back at Earth from space and experienced the special exhilaration and joy that energy, focus, and passion can bring to those who reach for the stars. Early interests and clear role models can lead to excellence in any field—particularly science, technology, engineering, and math, where not even the sky’s the limit.

AMSE Foundation is inviting everyone to visit AMSE to ignite their family's curiosity and look up at the heavens and gaze into the stars.

This event is free with the price of admission.

From 10:00 am to 3:00 pm AMSE will offer guests activities for the whole family. We will also have some Decorate-Your-Self Telescopes, activity packets from NASA along with links to some on-line activities for star gazing at home in the evening hours. We will also have some opportunities to view the stars during the day with a bit of help from some technological gadgets.

AMSE will also host some wonderful films for this special day.

11am & 1pm: Showing of JWST Video followed by Observing with NASA program, giving instructions on how to use the OWN Kiosk

12pm & 2pm: Showing of the Flygirls: Women in Aerospace 30-min video

Unidentified Found Object Day

July 15, 2023 - 10:30am-1:30pm

The AMSE Foundation will bring together a unique collection of artifact sleuths to discover and decipher the public's Unidentified Found Objects for one day this July!

Guests are encouraged to bring their items to AMSE and we will discover and uncover their mysteries together. From old bones and fossils to Manhattan Project relics and more, our team will try to crack the mystery associated with your treasure.

One guest per U.F.O. will receive free entry to the museum.

As NASA prepares to return to the Moon the American Museum of Science and Energy’s 2023 Summer Camp will explore and share what it’s like to survive in space and Martian terrain.

“To the Moon and Beyond” will allow campers to explore and immerse themselves in hands-on experiments and experiences to replicate the astronaut experience. Special guests, exciting experiences, captivating experiments, NASA trained instructors, and so much more!

Camp will be at the American Museum of Science and Energy from June 19th to 23rd from 8:30 am – 4:00 pm. The cost will be $200 for non-members and $175 for members. There are a limited number of spaces available for this year's camp as there are some unique surprises on the schedule.

There are only a few available spots left!

EXHIBITS

What were once acorns sequestered by squirrels beneath the rich fall humus are now emerging as green shoots to greet the spring. Likewise, exhibits conceived last year have now fruited in our exhibit galleries. In addition to last month's opening of our new James Webb Space Telescope exhibit, the museum now hosts "Let's Play, the Elements of Electronic Gaming".

Visitors can learn about the evolution of games from the first addition of solenoids to pinball tables to modern online and virtual gaming. And they can have fun while doing it: the exhibit features playable versions of arcade cabinets, pinball, and handhelds like "Simon.” A Periodic Table of Electronic Games displays the most influential games of the last century. Be educated and entertained with "Let's Play"

The Observing with NASA (OWN) Kiosk is here through June thanks to the generosity of our friends at NASA. While this exhibit is in place, please check out the reflective mirror showcasing the James Webb Space Telescope exhibit.

EDUCATION

AMSEF Adventure Field Trips funded by Oak Ridge National Laboratory

With generous funding from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, AMSEF Educators have been busy conducting AMSEF adventure field trips from March to May. To date, 679 students from surrounding counties (i.e., Knox, Cumberland, Blount Roane, etc.) have experienced an academic adventure that allowed them to visit AMSE and enjoy exhibits on research and development, Oak Ridge history and participate in classroom activity labs and auditorium programs. This program will continue into the 2023 Fall school year along with more virtual and outreach classes available for schools with Title 1 status. Teachers that may be interested in Fall classes please contact lwright@amse.org for more information.

AMSEF Outreach Program

AMSE outreach had a wonderful time at the Children's Festival of Reading on May 20th at the World’s Fair Park in Knoxville. Children and adults enjoyed two AMSE performances that were given about Space at the Science & Discovery Tent. What a wonderful way to kick off the summer reading program at libraries and enjoy meeting authors, storytellers, and a host of community groups and organizations.

STEM OF HISTORY

STEM of History

The STEM of History (SOH) is a podcast produced by the American Museum of Science and Energy Foundation (AMSEF) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee with funding support from Humanities Tennessee and the National Endowment for the Humanities. This series examines the intersection of science with history. It focuses on tracing how scientific inquiry is interpreted in the historical record, and in turn, the impact of historical analysis to informing scientific inquiry.

This fascinating glimpse into how Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) has been present throughout history shows no great feat has ever been accomplished without the aid of these four key elements. Listen to an amazing list of guests and contributors in original interviews “talk shop” about how the world goes round and attempts to improve itself with every spin.

The STEM of HISTORY has been developed with a generous grant from Humanities Tennessee and the National Endowment for the Humanities. https://amse.org/stem-of-history/
