BEING. BELIEVING. BELONGING.

by Jo Strausz Rosen

After meeting late in life through an online dating site, then falling head over heels in love with each other, Jane and Arthur decided it was time to take the next step in their relationship. As much as they both loved the beautiful home they had shared for the past 20 years, it was getting more and more difficult for these eighty-five-year-old homeowners to muster up the energy it took to care for their property.

We invite our JSL community of readers to become writers and send in your stories for the opportunity to appear in the Shabbat Shalom Newsletter. Relevant stories about aging, volunteerism, living our best lives, inspirations, and mindfulness will be appreciated. Funny, sad, poignant, newsworthy, nonpolitical pieces are welcome. WANTED: FRIENDS!

Whenever I leave my office, I have to leave at least 10-15 minutes early in order to get where I’m going on time. It’s the great joy of my job to walk through the hallways and lobbies of our buildings and visit with all the new friends I’ve made since I started here a year ago.

As director of FRIENDS of JSL, I am thrilled to help connect this community to the larger community, bringing people of all ages together to support the incredible older adults who live here. I invite you to join me.

There are so many ways you can provide support and / or get involved. If you’re not sure exactly where you might fit, I’d be happy to help you find the perfect opportunity.

Some of the ways you can be a part of FRIENDS are:

Volunteer – Whether it’s running a Bingo game, working in the boutique or bistro, visiting residents, or leading an activity based on your interests, JSL is a very busy place and there’s always something to do here.

Shop and Nosh – Our boutiques, bistro and café are all volunteer operated and the proceeds support the programs and events that keep us all busy. So, come for lunch and visit the boutique for clothes, gifts, greeting cards, etc. We have something for everyone.

Tributes – Donate to the FRIENDS of JSL Fund in honor or memory of a dear one.

Join a Committee – FRIENDS plans two annual community programs to honor our older adults – The Bessie Spector Oldest Jewish Americans Celebration and Lives Well Lived.

Please feel free to call or email me to explore how you can be a FRIEND of JSL!

Tables of Contents

The contents of our dinner tables may contain delicious food, but are the conversations at the table replete with meaningful exchanges?

Occasionally, those gathered around our tables are engaged in words of chatter, gossip or emptiness. We should become aware of these kinds of settings so that we can free ourselves from engaging in these environments.

Rebbe, a second century scholar, enjoyed personal opulence. Our sages teach that “His table never lacked exotic radish nor lettuce, neither during the sunny season nor during the rainy season. His table was full of the choicest foods and delicacies.” We can easily assume that Rebbe’s table was indeed one of spiritual content as well.

Today, a variety of discussion topics are readily available to us, from politics, career, family to global matters. We have the choice to make our tables, tables of content and safe environments. Or the opposite. Let us be sure that our dinner tables are tables of content filled not only with delectables but also imbued with meaning and purpose. Utilize the opportunity to teach, inspire and engage those present around your table with meaningful table talk.

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
