Announcing a Brand New Book Group
WORDS (We Only Read Diverse Stories)

What do we mean by "Diverse Stories"? All those wonderful books that highlight the experiences, culture, and places of those most often underrepresented in traditional publishing. Books that offer stories that include a wide variety of cultural, racial, and religious experiences as well as characters with varied gender identities or sexual orientations, age ranges, physical and mental abilities, and economic situations.

It is a wonderfully diverse world that we live in, and we're excited to spend more time exploring with the books we read.

The group will meet on the 2nd Tuesday of the month, starting January 11th, at 7pm.

The first book we'll discuss in January is "Of Women and Salt" by Gabriela Garcia. This book is a sweeping, masterful debut about a daughter's fateful choice, a mother motivated by her own past, and a family legacy that begins in Cuba before either of them were born.

Copies of the book are available at the Main Desk.
Virtual Author Event: Cheryl Savageau
Join us as we have a conversation with Pulitzer Prize nominated author Cheryl Savageau about her work. She will read from her work, and there will be a Q&A.

Thursday, January 13 at 7pm via Zoom

She is the author of the memoir Out of the Crazywoods, as well as poetry collections & a children's book. She is also a mentor to Native American writers through the Wordcraft Circle of Native Writers and Storytellers, and teaches at the Middlebury Breadloaf School of English.
Author Event: Alafair Burke
We are partnering with other Massachusetts libraries to host a Virtual Author Event with bestselling thriller writer Alafair Burke in conversation with Hank Phillippi Ryan on
Monday, January 24 at 7pm.

They will be discussing Burke's latest book, "Find Me".

This twisty mystery is about how the disappearance of a young woman leaves her best friend reeling and an NYPD homicide detective digging into her own past.

What's Happening in Children's?
New Programs in the New Year
First, a huge thank-you to all the wonderful patrons and staff who donated to our Giving Tree! Every year you can be counted on to help out with this effort, but in these difficult times you outdid yourselves by donating more gifts than ever. You have made Christmas so much merrier for homeless children served by Emmaus, Inc., and we our deeply moved by your generosity.

Likewise, thank you for the many Holiday Cards for the Homeless that you created – we are grateful for your kindness and compassion.

Now that the holidays are over, the Children’s Department is starting the new year with some brand-new programs! For our very youngest patrons we’ll have a four-week infant massage class, where parents will learn how to massage, relax, and soothe their infants. (The class is strictly limited to newborns and pre-crawling infants, and participants must attend all four sessions of the training which will take place on 1/12, 1/26, 2/2, and 2/9). For older children we have three new book groups: “I Survived” for ages 7-8, “First Chapters” for ages 7-9, and “Story Crime” for ages 9-11.

We’ll also be teaming up with our Teen librarian to offer a game club once a month, and we’ll invite kids’ input at our first meeting in January.

As ever, we’ll also have our usual variety of preschool programs, storytimes (including a bilingual program), science sessions, and craft clubs -- keep an eye on the Children’s Department calendar and Facebook page to learn about this and other upcoming programs!

Happy New Year, and Happy Reading!
