FINDLEY LAKE

WATERSHED FOUNDATION

Education is key when you have a lake like ours. The FLWF provides education on boating safety, education on buffer gardens and how to reduce the amount of your land waste making it into the lake and education on what phosphorus does to the lake. We all love Findley Lake and it’s important to keep it safe and healthy. Education is one way to help do that, so we plan to do a lot more of it.

Get to know us a little better here:  : MORE INFO HERE

Protect Your Eyes –

Solar Viewing Glasses

Available for Free

The Total Eclipse of the Sun is

Monday, April 8, 2024

By Rebecca Brumagin, Mina Town Supervisor

Even though total solar eclipses take place somewhere in the World approximately every 18 months, a total eclipse of the Sun occurs in the same location on average only once every 400 years. The moon passes between the Earth and Sun, completely covering the Sun and casting a shadow on Earth that blocks the light for close to four minutes.

On Monday, April 8, 2024, the path of totality for this stunning cosmic event will be viewable in our small town. It will be 400 years before the path of totality for a solar eclipse will return to Findley Lake, the Town of Mina, and Chautauqua County. The path of totality for the 2024 eclipse in North America begins in Mexico, crosses diagonally from south to north across the United States including the northern part of New York State and ends near Montreal, Canada.

Although the duration of totality is less than four minutes, the time frame from the beginning of the partial eclipse to the full eclipse and then the ending of the partial eclipse is approximately 2½ hours. In Chautauqua County the eclipse time period is from around 2 pm to 4:30 pm. During that 2½ hour span of time, it is essential that everyone protect their eyes by wearing credentialed solar eyeglasses. “The danger is real for permanent vision loss” according to a clinical spokesperson from the American Academy of Opthalmology.

To ensure safe viewing of this celestial spectacle, it is time to get solar viewing glasses for yourself and your family. Chautauqua County has credentialed ISO 12312-2 eyeglasses available for free from various distribution sites throughout the county including the Town of Mina Town Clerk’s Office at the Mina-Findley Lake Community Center, 2883 North Road, Findley Lake and the Findley Lake Volunteer Fire Department. More information on Chautauqua County’s distribution sites is available at chqgov.com. New York State also has distribution sites throughout the state. Information for New York State is available at ILOVENY.COM/ECLIPSE.

Protect yourself and all your family members – regardless of age – the 2½ hour span of time for viewing the solar eclipse requires that everyone wear protective eyeglasses.

“Everything under the sun is in tune but the sun is eclipsed by the moon” Pink Floyd 1995
