ARS Hires Geoffrey Burgess as New Managing Editor

He will replace longtime AR Editor Gail Nickless, who will be retiring after 30 years of service. Geoffrey is a recorder player who has written extensively about the late influential recorder maker Friedrich von Huene.

Focus on a Member Benefit: Workshop Scholarships

As the summer workshop season approaches, ARS members can avail themselves of a valuable member benefit: a scholarship. Two types are available -- one to help with a weekend workshop (defined as four days or fewer), and another to help with a week-long workshop. Proof of financial need is not necessary. The deadline is May 15.

Play-the-Recorder Day Virtual Event Held on March 16

Our annual recorder-centric month is nearly over, but the commemoration lives on. ARS Member Benefits Committee Chair Natalie Lebert hosted a Play-the-Recorder Day Zoom webinar where attendees were able to engage in a Q&A session with Jamie Allen, composer of Play-the-Recorder piece een mentaliteit.

ARS Election Approaching

It will soon be time to choose candidates for the Board of Directors. Members will receive an email on April 1 -- the 85th birthday of ARS! The email will contain a unique link for each member so they can vote securely. The election is open for voting until June 1. Please be sure we have your current email address by checking your member profile. (Members without email addresses on file will receive a mailed paper ballot.)

A New "Angel" Opportunity

Since 2019, nearly 20 "angels" have sponsored pieces of music for the ARS Members' Library Editions and Play-the-Recorder Month library.

 

Now ARS is extending its Angel sponsorship into virtual programs that bring recorder instruction to new players on Zoom.

The article by ARS member Michael Lynn in the LEARN department of the Spring American Recorder ("French Baroque recorder music from Marin Marais") gave us a recorder perspective on a newly-discovered manuscript of music by Marais. ARS Chapter Representative Roundtable to be Held in June

The Member Benefits Committee will hold the season's final Chapter Rep Round Table. The event can be found on the ARS homepage Events CalendarIt will be held June 1, 2024 from 2:00pm - 3:30pm Eastern time.

A Brief Reminder of ARS Scholarship & Grant Deadlines

Workshop Scholarships Any member who needs financial assistance to attend an in-person or online weekend or week-long workshop may apply for this scholarship. Deadline for week-long workshops: May 15

Weekend Workshop Scholarships Apply four weeks before funding is needed. Virtual events are also eligible for funding from Grants and Scholarships, as long as the amounts do not exceed stated limits.

Chapter and Recorder Orchestra Grants These grants are awarded to Chapters or Recorder Orchestras with 10 or more ARS members to supplement membership-enhancing programs. Deadline: May 15, with funds to be used after September 1

Educational Outreach Grants Meeting certain criteria, anyone teaching the recorder may apply for this grant. ARS membership is not required to apply. Application period: May 1-June 15, to be used after September 1

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Grants Any chapter, recorder orchestra, or consort may apply. Partner Workshops and Businesses are also eligible. Apply anytime.

Traveling Teacher Program Recorder communities without a recorder teacher in their area may apply for a grant to cover a professional teacher's traveling costs. Deadline: May 1, to be used after September 1

ARS Beginners' Level Class for Alto Recorder with Susan Richter


If you have never played recorder before, or if it has been eons ago since you have played, this is the course for you! Build a solid foundation for learning alto recorder through this 4-part beginners’ course. Recorder player/teacher Susan Richter will cover basics such as hand and finger position, tonguing, and tone, and instill good habits for continuing to learn on your own or with a teacher. All ages are welcome, but children should be joined by an adult during the classes.


April 2nd, 4th, 9th, and 11th at 5 PM, ET

*Beginner's Classes are free and open to everyone.

It’s easy to want to increase your finger speed, but difficult to know how to actually achieve it. In this live, four-week, small-group Zoom short course we’ll lay the foundations you need to build faster fingers over time. What does faster playing require of you and how can you work toward it? We’ll answer these questions and more. We’ll also complete weekly homework assignments, helping you develop habits of effective practice.

Baroque Fiddle Tunes

Different tunes will be played at each session. 


We will read, play, and discuss various survival skills for these charming pieces. A treble clef version of the sheet music for the tunes being played will be displayed on the screen during the workshop.


There is limited enrollment, and pre-registration is required. The cost for each workshop is $10. The cost of each optional book is $15 (includes shipping if ordered with workshop registration).
